I used to use DVD Decrypter but it won't crack some of the newer discs. Is WinX DVD Ripper stronger at cracking the security?
 Just downloaded that.

I've been using this: http://www.nas4free.org/ since the days when it was FreeNas. It's VERY simple to set up and use, and it's very extendable, with support for Apple and Windows networking built in. You can add on more disks when you need them and if a part fails it just uses standard parts available on most high streets or from the Bay of E.

OK, here's another question then oh wise guru Crax, can you get a NAS thingy that can get stuff off a mac and onto a PC?
I use an LG NAS which is accessible from both Macs & PCs (and iPads, iPhones & android tablets).

In answer to the OP's question: apart from backup & storage, I have it set up as a media server, so music, video & photos can be played by any networked player, and as an FTP server, so I can access my files when away from home. The software for those functions (and others) is built into the NAS. They can, however, be a bit fiddly to set up.

I built my own NAS from an old pc and memory stick (holding the os) along with 4T HD, I'm using unraid as the nas OS, Its being usedt for films, pictures & files there's about 400+ movies on there, and using xbmc to stream the content, works a treat!

I run freebsd on mine and samba, also host my own website for reference stuff and use it for sickbeard and sabnzbd which links up to my xbmc box
That's interesting. Xbmc is something I'm about to investigate. I'm not sure I'll run to a dedicated box for the tv, maybe off a laptop with an hdmi output.

Having been messing with ripping, I've settled on Makemkv and Handbrake. dvd decrypter was too out of date and WinX too slow, plus Handbrake will run a batch and needs to as it max's the processor and memory out. Just trying a few settings and then I think I may rip a select few DVD's and try streaming them in different situations, see what works best.

Edit: I've run pc's in raid mode and they are noisy and power hungry, so crossed that option off in favour of a dedicated box.
