I haven’t got the strength required , suffer from some arthritis in my hip and back, otherwise I would have tried to dig it out.

Ten years ago I would have done that.

Denis this is worth a try.Find your local church have a word and see if they have a team of volunteers ,we find someone will always go that extra mile to help someone in need.I used to do it but sadly age has finished me off.I just do my own.The roots will not be far down,go on give your local church a ring or visit.YOU will find someone.

Expose as much of the stump as you can
Slice the top of the stump like a pie (best done with a chain saw) go down as far as you can
Put fire lighter in the crevice
It will slowly burn away (will take about 2 days with a dry stump)

I can’t resort to the more drastic methods of removal like burning and oil / rotting.

The stump is close to a wooden fence, and I don’t want to contaminate the soil, as we want to plant the area with flowers etc.
Can’t get anything in there that would drag them out.

Has to be sheer man power or a stump grinder really.
