I got into work yesterday, and one of the secretaries from upstairs got chatting in the print room.

Her- I drove in behind you yesterday, all the way from the A370 lights.

Me- Oh, I did try and stay over so I could be overtaken.

Her- No,no, I didn't want to over take you, your calves have some serious definition, and those lycra shorts really look good.

Me- er, oh, anyway, maybe I'll ride in front of you again, er, ha ha ha,

Her- (as I was scuttling out the door) I hope so!

I had a hospital appointment today, saw a consultant about a recurring ear problem. I keep feeling dizzy.
In the preamble
him - how would you describe your overall fitness?
me - it's good.
him - any regular medication?
me - no
him - any regular exercise?
me - yeah, I do some cycling
him - how far do you go?
me - not so much in the week, but over the weekend I did an 80, then a 120 mile ride.
him - (stares over glasses) are you on the olympic team?

To be fair, that is quite a long way in one weekend (IMO)
But the furthest I've managed in one day is a touch over 60 miles.

Not really cycling related but does show the attitude of some people..

Sat on break at work about 3 days back. Supervisor sits down with us and a conversation pipes up between the women there about staying with friends. Supervisor then tells a story about how she's just got fined for speeding and 6 points now sit on her licence. "Its night time, I should be allowed to drive faster!" she pipes.

Not wanting to be "the irritating cyclist" and wishing to appeal to her better nature I say "...you're more likely to have a serious crash at night, than during the day. Thats why speed limits still apply."

She shuffles and then returns with "..anyway, this aint the worst bit of driving I've done. Went to stay at a friends one night, drank half a bottle of wine but her kids were annoying me and too loud. Decided 'sod it!' I'll drive home, just go slowly and carefully..."

The place went quiet. Then my workmate says "Thats not a good thing to be doing!!"

I, wishing to try and show her a way which will appeal to her selfish nature put in "..what if you had crashed? When you're pissed you don't always know how fast you're going. Its night, you crash and you get hurt, who is going to come to your aid? Theres nobody around."

I think it sunk in a little then. I get the feeling it was a one-off thing (apart from the speeding).

That "it's night time so speed limits don't apply" thing really annoys me. In the first place, there isn't an actual curfew in operation; just because it's night time doesn't mean there's never anyone around. I'm often out and about at 3 or 4 am. In the second place, it's a residential area and people's cats tend to be out and about at night, and besides if you're blasting past houses really quickly, you're making a lot more noise than you do at the limit. There are far more reasons for obeying the speed limits than the fact that people are about.

I've made a note who to ask for photocopying favours ;)

Can we move this to its own thread and agree regular updates (nothing that would be disruptive), say hourly? ;)

Non-cyclist: "I heard you cycle to work?"

Me: "Yes I do"

Non-cyclist: "But what about the rain, the cold, the traffic and the hills. Them hills must be torturous."

Classic from the man who happily admits to RLJ in the early hours of the morning driving his HGV! ;)

Him...'ooh its a lovely bike, how much did it cost ?'
Me....'about £650'
Him...'but you can buy a car for that kind of money  '

And then you tell them to even more incredulity..that £650 is really entry level pricing...you can spend an awful lot more'

I NEVER get that

But then again, my car cost me £350, was made in Czechoslovakia before VAG got around to turning the winged arrow into just another overpriced, overengineered and actually less reliable boring clone-car.

I do get a response to "well, about £650, and then £300 on lights, panniers and a couple of upgrades" of "why don't you just buy a decent car instead?"

I don't understand. I jump in my car every sunday, sit in a comfy seat, open the windows and sunroof if it's warm, and drive out to start a long walk in Derbyshire, Staffordshire or Cheshire, and it goes just the same as any other car, it's done a lot less miles than many other 16 year old cars, it's fast enough being capable of breaking any UK speed limit and it is simplicity itself to maintain with cheaply available spares. With the seats down I can sling 2 bikes in the back with ease, and with my fledgeling part-time business I can go to a cash & carry and fill it with stock, no worries (I am using the bike with the mule trailer attached to take parcels to the collect+ drop-off)

Oh..and it has alloy wheels and a rev counter

Why would I want to pay a shedload to replace it with an over-complex "no-user-serviceable-parts-inside" lump, just to leave it parked outside my house for at least 148 hours a week?

Cycled 6 miles to get a haircut, locked the bike up outside. removed a wheel and carried it into the barbers with me.
As she was cutting my hair, she asked (among other things)...where abouts in Pboro do you live ?
'Orton Goldhay' (the most direct route is via the dual carriageway, but i took the more circuitous, pleasant route)
'You didnt come down the dual carriageway did you ?'
'No, but i sometimes do'
'But thats illegal !!'

Err, no.

'Well its not safe anyway'

I tried to put her right and remember thinking, i'm wasting my time here

That "it's night time so speed limits don't apply" ... if you're blasting past houses really quickly, you're making a lot more noise than you do at the limit.

In Austria, speed limits for larger vehicles are reduced overnight in order to reduce noise levels.
