My wife and her mother always made it how I assumed was the traditional way (don't recall my mum ever making it).
But Mr Google tells me there are all sorts of recipes incuding frying and adding baked beans......SACRILEGE
So.....
Chopped potatoes
Chopped carrots
Chopped onion
At some stage add oxo cubes and maybe relish..
Boil it up and leave to simmer/thicken.
Throw in the chopped corned beef towards the end.
Job done ^_^

Carrots?

For me its a simple throw together meal

Tatties, Boiled.
Corned Beef
Onions
Baked Beans
Maybe a pinch of pepper
All mashed together and put into a roasting dish with cheese to bake on top.

Plenty of seasoning already in the boiled potatoes and corned beef.

Simple, tasty and quicker than Deliverpoo...

Why are you putting carrots in there?

Chop some potatoes, boil them for a while.

Fry onions, add the corned beef and potato to the pan. Put in HP or Worcestershire sauce if you like.

But no carrots.

Potatoes aren't pukka veg - you need veg. :hungry:

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

That's exactly how I make it as well accept for the relish. Only I put half the corned beef in half way through then the rest at the end. :okay:

That sounds a bit like my Monday Pie (supposed to use leftover Sunday roast beef, but I use mince).
Ingredients
  • 220g Potato, sliced
  • 125g Mince, drained
  • 133g Tinned tomatoes
  • 70g Onion, finely chopped
  • 140g Baked beans
  • 40g Cheese (2 slices)
  • 3g Flour
  • 3g Bovril
  • 0.4cc Pepper
Method
  • Measure out and chop ingredients.
  • Parboil the potato 8mins
  • Brown and drain the mince.
  • Stir in tomato, beans, onion, flour, Bovril, pepper.
  • Place in casserole, and cover with sliced potato.
  • Bake 50mins @190
  • Cover with cheese.
  • Bake another 10mins.

I predict this thread will reach levels of vitriolic argument and personal abuse that will condemn it to transportation to the new NACA.
You could say that about any thread...

Although, i was deeply offended by the "SACRILEGE" remark made by Dave regarding the beans. I have however saved my 15 inch salvos for a later date and have just fired a few QF 3 inch rounds at the use of Carrots...

It's supposed to be a rough and ready thing isn't it, a poor man's dish, so I guess you can put in whatever you have and it can't be "wrong" as such. It's not some French classic dish.
The key ingredients of course are corned beef and potato but really it's one of those where there will be variation. Put beans in if you like, I won't be offended (although I won't be eating it either).

My mum taught me to add grated onions, and she offered up the option of grated carrot if you wanted them. Worcester sauce was a staple in her recipe, along with a bit of oxo stock. But no beans, and no tomatoes.
Personally I like to brown it, so it's nice to either pop it in a hot oven, or under a grill, or make cakes from cold hash, flour them, and shallow fry them.
