Generally I've always had old cars and can certainly see the appeal of some older stuff; be it for nostalgia, simplicity, ease of repair etc.

I've had my fair share of old Fords and VWs, and while not always plan sailing, have largely enjoyed the experience.

Of course all the interesting stuff a twenty-something Wafter could pick up for £1-2k in the early 2000s is now ridiculous money. I can understand this in many instances - hot hatches tend to get abused, tastelessly modified, crashed.. and nice ones can quickly disappear from the roads.

While I resent the fact that a lot of these have apparently become nothing more than investment vehicles for the rich, I can see some intrinsic worth in minty examples of what few remain; stuff like Mk1 and Mk2 Golf Gtis, Pug 205 Gtis, old Civics, CRXs, Astra GTEs, 5 GT Turbos, Williams Clios, Mk1 and Mk2 XR2s etc. I can also understand, to an extent the ridiculous sums really old fast Fords are changing hands for - Mk1&2 Escorts, Cortinas, Capris etc.

What I can't get my head around is the silly money being asked for more modern and far less impressive vehicles - boggo Sierras, Mk4/5/6 Escorts, Mk3+ Fiestas.. all of which are, let's face it - utter crap by every conceivable metric.

I understand that the desire to own this stuff is somewhat irrational and driven by the heart rather than the head, but seriously - it seems insane what some appear to be paying for a manky old Mk5 Escort compared to what else that money would get you.

Each to their own and all that, but I can't help that people buying this peripheral tat must have a bit of a screw loose. Am I wrong?

The market has gone mad. I sold my Porsche 964RS back in 2002 for £26,000. They're now nudging £200,000

In other motoring news I see Shell have posted the highest profits for fifteen years.
Correction, a Hundred and fifteen years.
I think this deserves its own thread.

The plethora of restoration programmes, Bangers and Cash has no doubt contributed. Theyre popular, easy watching, interesting, it possibly fires people I to action, where to start, something affordable...and suddenly, there's a demand that ddnt exist..and we all know what demand does....

In 30 years these will be the good old days

If I'm still about in 30 years time I'll be a 101, now thats a more scary thought than these being the good old days.

Could part of the reason be that being older and less reliant on electronics, they are easier to work on than newer cars.

Also, dont forget that if they were manufactured before 1st Jan 1982 they are exempt from VED

Pal of mine owns a mint 1980 Golf GTi. Had the pleasure of a short drive in it last year. Bloody awful. You forget how far cars have moved on in the last 40 years.

Had a mate with a MK1 GTi lovely car, another had a pug GTi 1.9 which scared the poo out of me!
My daughter wants a new mini as a first car are they classic yet? They are half way between the old mini and today!
