Generally I've always had old cars and can certainly see the appeal of some older stuff; be it for nostalgia, simplicity, ease of repair etc.
I've had my fair share of old Fords and VWs, and while not always plan sailing, have largely enjoyed the experience.
Of course all the interesting stuff a twenty-something Wafter could pick up for £1-2k in the early 2000s is now ridiculous money. I can understand this in many instances - hot hatches tend to get abused, tastelessly modified, crashed.. and nice ones can quickly disappear from the roads.
While I resent the fact that a lot of these have apparently become nothing more than investment vehicles for the rich, I can see some intrinsic worth in minty examples of what few remain; stuff like Mk1 and Mk2 Golf Gtis, Pug 205 Gtis, old Civics, CRXs, Astra GTEs, 5 GT Turbos, Williams Clios, Mk1 and Mk2 XR2s etc. I can also understand, to an extent the ridiculous sums really old fast Fords are changing hands for - Mk1&2 Escorts, Cortinas, Capris etc.
What I can't get my head around is the silly money being asked for more modern and far less impressive vehicles - boggo Sierras, Mk4/5/6 Escorts, Mk3+ Fiestas.. all of which are, let's face it - utter crap by every conceivable metric.
I understand that the desire to own this stuff is somewhat irrational and driven by the heart rather than the head, but seriously - it seems insane what some appear to be paying for a manky old Mk5 Escort compared to what else that money would get you.
Each to their own and all that, but I can't help that people buying this peripheral tat must have a bit of a screw loose. Am I wrong?
