With Julia Bradbuy on Wainwrights Walks/Railway Walks, Griff Rhys Jones on Rivers and Michael Portillo currently presenting Great Railway Journeys, I wondered if our British Canals could get the BBC TV treatment - on the towpath by bike ?

It shouldn't be too hard to get good some scenery along with the British heritage interest, just needs the right (cycling) presenter person

My question is - do you have any favourite canals and who would you choose to front such a programme ?

It's a good idea, but......

On all of these programmes, there are at least three cameramen, a sound man ( or two ) a director, make up, lighting, etc etc; Vans full of equipment.

Will they all be riding bikes or just joining the cyclist at the pub?

How much footage will there be from the rider's helmet cam? and how much from the ice cream spoon cam?

If the program is shot on one of Birmingham's canals, will there be two heavy bodyguards to stop the bikes being stolen?

There used to be an ITV Central programme called Water World which ran for several series and I did a few bits for them. They are still being repeated on one of the many satelite channels as people often come up to me and say they've seen me on telly:wacko:

If a film crew can follow Jules B on Helvelyn then surely they can cycle down a towpath? They manage to film off piste for the snowboard/sci bits on sci sunday
Still need suggestions for the presenter please

Isn't that bloke with glasses from Coast a bit of a cyclist, failing that Frank Skinner or Mark Williams, don't know if they cycle though.

Yes Hilldodger, I've seen you a few times as Waterworld is one of my favourite programmes on TV. Since I retired, I arrange my coffee break around it! I've a yen to own a (small) narrowboat. Whether that dream ever comes to fruition is another matter. I think you'd be a good presenter on a cycling programme.

Use something other than a bicycle? What a strange idea. What are you, some kind of weirdo?

In Country Walking a few months back (well maybe nearly a year) the magazine did a bit about JB doing the Coast2Coast and all she had for the filming was a cameraman, soundman and a director/clapperboy/porter as company.

My choice would be Alice Roberts (actually it would be Vicky Pendulum, but I guess she would be far too busy wot with the training for 2013)
Failing that, we'll just have to rely on Roger the Dodger
