How the hell did you get a day pass from the Missus to do an 80 mile ride whilst on holiday? Can you have a word with mine please?
When I went to Corfu about 15 years ago with my g/f and stepdaughter, there were a couple of days when they just wanted to lie around on the beach all day in the sun. That's not my idea of a fun time, and I didn't see why I should have to sit there watching them tan so I walked down the road to a scooter hire shop after I heard that the owner had just bought some bicycles. I hired a not-too-bad hybrid bike and went off and explored the northern half of the island!

I called back at the beach after 2 or 3 hours and they hadn't got bored of toasting, so I went off and did another hour or 2 before dropping the bike off. When I got back from that, they were still lying about reading or sleeping so I swam out to some caves that I'd noticed earlier across the bay.

After that, I felt like I was starting to suffer from over-exposure to the sun so I retired to a shaded bar at the end of the beach and drank a nice cold bottle of Amstel Gold.

And just as I got to the point where I fancied having a little snooze, they finally came to life and decided that they wanted to walk up the hillside to a little village that we'd found earlier in the week, so that's what we did.

They did what they wanted to do and I did what I wanted to do. What's not to like!

Every time I think of Lanzarote, I am instantly reminded of some neighbours we used to have who went there *EVERY* year.
The reason why I remember??
Why, they didn't call it Lanzarote, oh no.....

... In their best *ned like* nasal Glasgow Accents, they always called it

'Lanzaro'e!'

'Ocht aye, we're aff tae Lanzaro'e again this year!.

The place will *always* be associated with them, probably lying on the beach all day and getting pi*sed in the evenings. Seriously, going to exactly the same place each year just smacks of a monumental lack of imagination to me!!

Those pics bring back very happy memories.

The wind is indeed the biggest issue, but I'd take that every day and twice on Sunday's compared to the persistant $hitty weather we get in the UK.

We just missed the IM when we went in '09, it was on the week previous so all the road messages were really fresh.

Ride safe

Did two weeks in Lanzarote on the bikes many years ago. Descended from Fire Mountain in excess of 50 mph, overtaking cars on the straight runs. Didn't bear tinking about crashing, those rocks are sharp !

4 Reasons

1. She's a great girl
2. She is also a cyclist so knows what it is all about
3. I start at first light (06>56) so am back late morning with the rest of the day spare
4. She's a great girl

Today I went a bit longer (50.2 miles) and went anticlockwise. http://app.strava.com/activities/57273730

This meant a chunky ascent to start with - check the chart out!

But it meant I got some great views at the top.

The wind was still strong but I seemed to cope better today although I was still not flat out down some of the hills. Made 45mph but not Fossyant's 50+

This route had me going through more villages and towns which was nice and I stopped for a cafe con leche in Tinajo.

Final pic for today.

I had planned to return the bike today but Wendy suggested I keep it for the rest of the week

Happy days

On Saturday and Sunday I did a couple of 30 milers. Today I did a cracking 100k ride which took in a fair bit of the island. http://app.strava.com/activities/57955092

I got royally scalped going up the first big hill but had a good chat with the guy.

I went a bit further north today and the landscape looked almost desert like at times

Then it was on to Caleta de Farmas and then past Club Le Santa. I stopped at Ignacio's in Tinajo for breakfast

I was back in Playa Blanca for noon

Then - a bit of shopping and onto the beach with the lady

By the way, if you rent a bike - remember to check your brakes. This one had the front levers on the left and the rear on the right, which I think is quite usual overseas.

Home tomorrow.

Brilliant! I went there last year, on a geology trip, so driving everywhere. If we'd had a day off I'd have liked to find a bike and do some riding (but I enjoyed the rocks too!). Some of the pics take me back...

Came back on Tuesday - didn't hire a bike in the end (other than one of those 'flinstones' family things for two hours.

Trying to shake off achilles tendinitis and with commuting by bike a holiday was the ideal time to give my ankle a rest for a couple of weeks. Especially with ride london in only 3...
