I've got a week on holiday with the family close to Rye in East Sussex in early August. Will no doubt be doing a bit of pottering around locally on the bikes with the kids, but given I've got a trip to Ventoux looming in September, I'll need to get a few reasonable solo rides in as well.

I don't know the area that well (usual stomping ground is the Surrey Hills), but from a quick look at the map, the obvious area to head into seems to be the High Weald.

I've no issue heading off in that general direction myself and getting "lost" for a few hours, but thought I'd throw the question out to CC to see if anyone can suggest a few good routes or general areas to try?

Lumpy is good, and up to 50-60 miles is easily doable. Cheers

Thanks Vickster - did have a look on there earlier but most routes seem to be to the West of Eastbourne or further North into Kent. There are one or two possibilities, but they're a little further afield.

jefmcg you're a star, that looks about perfect for a few hours training and some peace and quiet away from the brood.

Coffeejo - excellent - coffee stop already sorted en route

Anyone else with further suggestions???

This is my area. It's pan flat if you head east across Romney Marsh all the way to Hythe, about 20 miles, lots of quiet country roads or there is a hilly route along the downs. Head west through Pett level you soon get to Fairlight and Battery Hill which is one of the biggest climbs in this area, this road descends into Hastings for fish and chips or ice cream. Heading north through Wittersham to Tenterden is lumpy and mostly off the main roads which are often narrow and worth avoiding.
