My local bike shop told me to get 105 cassettes over Tiagra

They weren't trying to hard sell them, they just said they were a bit more durable in their experience and worth the extra money.
Aren't 10 speed chains and cassettes more likely to wear out quicker, as they have to be manufactured thinner to fit the extra cog into the available space?
Back in the old days, it never crossed my mind to change a cassette or chain on my Simplex 5 speed gears!

What about 11 speed ?? Does that wear out faster still?

I find that maintenance and care dictates the life of drive train components as much as anything.

I dare not say what i spent last year on bike related stuff, just in case swmbo reads this. But i did buy an sram cassette for about 17 quid, a chain whip and cassette nut thingy for 9 quid, and did ir myself. I was also chuffed to have done it for the first time and it has been faultless.

Or a SRAM cassette, as they are cheaper and lighter !

The OP what you have is just wear and tear. I would actually squirt Gt85 into the shifters before shelling out and changing the shift cables inners and outers as it's more likely the cables being sticky.

If you are doing miles in all weathers then parts do wear out. Then there is the upgrade , or new stuff bug. But, think about it. If you are commuting by bike, you are probably saving a wedge from fuel or public transport costs, so when that new wheel set bill arrives every 18 months, it's actually less than a month's fuel costs.

I knew a bloke who fancied himself a golfer, I don't mean someone who has a 9 iron and whacks a basket of balls here there and everywhere - no - the Full Monty.
He came into the pub looking more ridiculous than me in my Max Wall pants well hidden behind a table. He had taken his shoes off, just like me but he was dressed like Arnold Palmer and then some. In his car he had £1000 worth of clubs/bag on wheels etc. it had cost him almost as much for club membership and fees and the best part - he hadn't hit a ball yet. I added up his expenses and converted it to my hobby which was roughly a Pinarello with Super Record.
Cycling can be like a the 9 iron example or 'Arnold Palmer', you get to choose.

Is it the general case that the higher the spec of parts, the quicker they wear out? I have 9 speed Tiagra kit on 2 bikes.
My 4 year old Tricross has done 9500 miles and at a rough estimate has used 2 cassettes, 2 chains, 1 bottom bracket, and is only now needing the chain rings replaced (probably just the middle ring). Shifters are original, and an occasional squirt of ACF50 keeps them sweet. Cost of parts has been reasonable, using ChainReaction, and all repairs are DIY..
The Secteur has done about 2500 miles and everything looks as new! It doesn't go out in the rain though.
I am of course, a canny Scot.....!

A Scot not going out in the rain? you'll be housebound then

On 9spd I would just use an Ultegra 6500 cassette, cheap as chips. Buy some tools and do the rest yourself, wheels are usually on offer by someone so there is no need to pay silly prices for any of it.

VED £250 for 12 months
Tyres £70-130 a corner
wear & tear ~£10 a month
servicing £200 on average
MOT £35
and that's before the £300 a month repayments and depreciation.

Totted up, the family car is our single largest monthly expense. The only thing that doesn't cost me a penny is road tax ;)

I'd love it if we were in a position to be car free & only have bike spending, but right now we aren't.
