Assume everyone around here already has a bike or 10. Let's compare what it's like to drive a car per mile.
Suppose you have 5 bikes already, a gravel bike, a folding bike, an MTB, a road and a cargo bike. So you've got all bases covered.
Want to go on the train? Take your folding bike.
Want pure fun? It's the MTB or road bikes.
Want comfort on the road? Gravel.
Want to haul ass, and shopping? Cargo is your bike.
Suppose it costs £200 to service each bike, once per year. That's a £grand.
Now you buy a car. You need it to be fast like the road bike, to have off road capability like an MTB, comfortable like a gravel bike, cargo space like, well, a cargo bike, and small like a folding bike. Ok, so forget the small bit. That ain't gonna happen.
You choose, uhm, a Range Rover SVR (fast, spacious, comfortable, off road able, cargo space). That a £100k. You add some options. That's £120k. But dang it you need the 22 inch wheels, more power, special paint and you bought the 4 year service plan. So £150k. To the heck with it, let's say that includes insurance too (coz heck if I'm going to calculate extra 5h1t). So 150k all in.
Over 5 years, that works out at £7.5k per year. Wait, that doesn't sound right. Oh, 30k per year.
So thats 30k per year compared to 1k servicing per year for 5 bikes (and we're not even comparing the folder bike!).
Conclusion from this analysis: cars are way more expensive. So, well, that's that.
