A lot of prejudice on this thread based on nothing but the kind of bike a young person happens to be riding. And we're surprised when the rest of the population reacts this way?

Funny, but all car drivers are classed together but when it's someone on a bike they're not a cyclist

Thought you might have been but it just goes to show how easy it is for ousiders to read something like that and get a bad impresion of cyclists.

Everyone makes mistakes occasionally and it's a little unfair to expect a teenager to have the same road sense as someone older. Experience is a wonderful thing.

Surprised its not more, actually. However it sounds like the kid was repentant and was more of an act of not thinking of consequences rather than being a lout. We all know that's a fairly human trait - I reckon we'd all be lying if we said we haven't done anything very very stupid in a moment of carelessness.

Attitudes towards cyclists are not going to change overnight, and we probably always will be lumped into one big group because to most people there isn't much to differentiate us. Stereotypes they may be, motorists get easily broken down into women drivers, men drivers, Mercedes drivers, red cars, 4x4s, etc. etc. - to most people we're just someone on a bike - a cyclist - and so our stereotype starts there.
