Cyclist on a14

I drive up the A14 on a regular night run to Burton on Trent, a couple of nights last week I came across a cyclist between Cambridge and Fenstanton, now he had a dirty high vis vest on no rear lights working as I passed him he had two very bright front lights one on his helmet the other on his bars, if anyone knows this idiot they should tell him to swap one of his front lights for a rear one before somebody hits him. I came very close Wednesday night, having to swerve at the last minute as luck would have it nobody was overtaking me at the time.

maybe the battery ran out on the journey and he didn't realise?

Graham does say it was a couple of nights - once might be bad luck with a battery.... Unless he just turned the rear light on without actually looking at it.

S'what I was thinking. Seems odd to bother having 2 front lights but nothing at the rear.

Unless the rider hadn't twigged that the function of 'being seen' is as important as 'seeing'. Does seem odd, to have two front lights and no rear, I admit.

He saw him at the last moment and swerved.

I've had to do the same for a moron time trialist on the A50 near Derby.

When iv passed cyclists even with no rear lights,iv seen them, and if your in a pitch black scenario, their viz or front lights would be noticable wouldnt they, even from a bit away?

That is odd I've see plenty of people with lots rear leds and no front light, I've never seen it the other way.

The moron didn't have a hi viz or even reflectors on his bike. Being a racer boy he probably wanted to save weight.

It reads a dirty hi viz doesnt it?
Just realised your on about your cyclist, sorry thought you meant the op.
Im still not convinced that you cant notice a cyclist, even by your own headlights in the dark?

Well I did otherwise I'd have hit him, but you're a lot closer before you do, especially with dipped beam, even travelling a 50mph as I was.

There's no excuse, riding on a fast road at night with no rear lights is just beyond stupid.

I've seen plenty of people riding that stretch. They are nutters but most of them are wearing hi-viz and decked out with lights even during the day. I'm not sure I would want to ride along the A14 but then there aren't many other alternative routes in that area.

On the other hand when it is snarled up and the traffic is crawling, I wish I could get my bike out and breeze past all the cars.
