I think I am going to stick with Dawes and look @ the Nomad
Why are you looking only at a galaxy? I was looking for a touring type bike and I found them very expensive for what you get. I ended up with a Kona honky inc for 1000gbp from my LBS but you can get them from here for 925 http://www.evanscycles.com/products...oogle&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=froogle
If you look at the specs it just wins out hands down and with disc brakes can take loaded braking much better than calliper systems.
I live in Cornwall and it's loaded sometimes for work. I go up 1x 8% 2x 10% and a 14% on my route to work...Gearing is all wrong fella. Like to see you get your honky up a half decent hill / mountain when loaded up with gear.
Which model did you choose ?I bought a galaxy about three years ago. Its done a couple of thousand miles and I love it. It's comfy and reliable what more do you want?
Watch the sizing though some people I know have struggled with dawes sizing and I found that I (5'11) needed the largest size and an extended stem because of my longer torso, it just gives ,me enough stand over without me singing sopranoDawes have gone for a compact frame on the new ones now so you might not have a problem.
I got mine on a cheap deal, not sure Id pay RRP
I went for the 'bog standard' bottom of the range one. I wanted the bar end shifters so I could use a bar bag and at the time spa cycles were selling them for about £600 IIRC. I tried the 57cm but it was too cramped so I bought the 60cm (and still had to put the longer stem on). I have about an inch gap between the top tube and 'me bits' when I stop, which is fine. The saddle isn't at its lowest either.Which model did you choose ?
Also what size frame , I am 5'10''
The Galaxy Plus has the Bar end shifters, I have never used bar end shifter or disc brakes but from what I have read better stopping power.I went for the 'bog standard' bottom of the range one. I've just had a look at Dawes' website. It now lists the 58cm as it's largest size, but they now have a sloping top tube so I don't know how, if at all, that will affect the overall sizing.
I spotted the jar of MarmiteI have a 2012 Horizon and at 5'10" I use a 53cm bike with a 120mm stem. This is how much seatpost it leaves: -
