My Orbea vibe needs a new battery but the prices I have been quoted are silly expensive,
Would it be possible to fit an external battery & controller & retaining the rear hub drive ?

Just checked and they seem to be £500-600

which is the same sort of price as i have seen for my Bosch system - and I thought that was bad!!

so I can see you point - before you try anything - check on how "protected" the electronics are
I have heard - probably from people who know about such things - the the Bosch system can - and will - disable the system if it detects anything going on that is does not recognise as "proper Bosch"

so check if your system does the same

Yep the Bosch set up can detect non-standard batteries etc and it will notwork with any dealer diagnostics.

Shimano batteries are around the same and both can be more.

After a quick look it looks like they are Mahle motors and batteries so they may be able to work with something different ;wave goodbye any warranty though and obviously there are plenty of dodgy e-bike batteries about.

It’s £600 for the Mahle battery which has to be coded to the bike, I’d rather just strip out the mahle battery & get an external battery & controller,

The Mahle SP1 battery extender for X35 like my GT Bolt doesn't "feed" the motor directly, it slow charges the internal battery.

I got my SP1 from Ribble for ~£450 back around early February iirc.

I know very little about it, but if your ebike is Mahle X35, have a look at XS Switch upgrade.
