Right, decision made. Given the lack of availability of mid-priced bikes, and the fact that I can't really afford a nice new one, I am going to stick with my Raleigh Amazon and spend a bit of money on that. May start a thread on the resto in the appropriate forum. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice. I'll bear it all in mind for later when things may be better. Cheers all!

I have a Cannondale Quick 3 w/disc brakes. Love it. Swapped out the heavier stock wheels for a set of Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels with tubeless tires. Like the setup even more, but the stock setup is certainly ok....
