Decking and electric - HOw much!

So, had the man shed built at the top of the garden and now just need it finishing off with decking and electric

The decking needed is 2.4 meter wide by 1.5 meters in one half but then only 1 meter in the other half. Just had a quote of £1200!! Which I think is excessive

Same person will run 20 meters of armoured cable to a new small fuse box connected to the mains in the house, to another small fuse box in the shed, and then fit 2 inside lights, 1 outside light, and 4 double plug sockets inside the shed. £700 - again, this is more than I was expecting..

So, am I just being nieave and this is he going rate or is this expensive?

So the groundworker is doing your electrics? It is difficult to say if the decking is dear or not without knowing how much work is involved with getting things ready.

You will find there are decking calculators online that will give you an insight into material costs.

The ground is grassed an flat to the eye but not if you put a spirit level on it so I'm guessing it would need some posts concreted in maybe to make it stable

I bet the groundworker is not Part P registered either. and external works like that are MOST DEFINITLEY building control notifiable works .

oh its only building regs , not important. till you get a fine as you broke a rather large piece of legislation.


as for decking costs. we bought all the decking and support timbers for a deck 10m x3m with a second bit 10m x 1m for £600inc VAT . tannalized deck and supports and "sleepers" for the edging . ( Lawsons timber large independent supplier)

took me 2 days to complete on my own . based on a decent wage with all overheads covered thats £250 a day . so yours i reckon is a days work so about £400 heavy.

the electrics is a complete pisstake tho.

£100 for the 2 consumer units and RCBOs
£65 for the cable and glands
£50 for the internal cabling

a day to do that so £250 labour with overheads etc so a nice profit of £200 odd

1st question to ask is what is his competent installer/person scheme registration number . Then it can be checked to see if it is real.

3rd party certification is a no no for the reputable scheme operators ( NAPIT are only ones who will sanction) and if he says " a mate will certify and notify it" walk away.

On top of what @subaqua said, I would also consider getting in touch with your local council if the chap is not Part P registered, as he needs to be stopped before someone ends up with a nasty electrical fire caused by incompetence.

sadly local council won't do much except charge the homeowner the relevant fee for an " inspection to ascertain compliance with Building regs"

the bit about 3rd party notifications is there because of the schemne operators who allow 3rd party. the reputable ones don't allow ( NICEIC , ELECSA )

if he is claiming to be a member of one of the scheme operators and he isn't, then that is worth doing and I can put you in touch with most scheme operators compliance teams. they love taking to task.

I got my garage wired up , I supplied and laid the armour cable, the Spark supplied new house consumer unit , small consumer unit for garage , 2 sockets , 2 strip lights , 1 outside light and took £300 and did the job in under 4 hours , most of that was installing the house consumer unit.

again , if done since 2004 . all part P notifiable . just make sure you have the notification . then you know its all legal.

I am not a part P fan ( A Tax on qualified electricians) but we need a level playing field.

Who would know whether it was done before or after 2004 and I would need to inform them I have built a garage as well

wiring colours is a big give away. you confuse building regs and planning permission.

however lets hope it doesn't have anything go wrong and insurance investigators start digging . ( they will ) or it could be really expensive. but hey its only the law and its a "victimless crime " innit

I actually don't know myself when it was wired up , I built the garage in 2000 and had It wired up a while later, I would say sometime around 2004 but I have no idea really .
I was joking about informing them about the garage , it does not require planning permission .

And Part P I just checked is from May 2005 in Scotland .

The electrics are steep. I did my own shed. Decking, you'd be surprised at the cost of wood !!

You are right in thinking the Quote for the Decking is over the top (i am a joiner). with out seeing what preparation is needed first
try getting some more prices together you may catch a guy thats not busy who will give you a better price .
