Derailleur issues.

So, I've recently bought a new derailleur and I'm having a issue. i've connected the gear cable. but the derailur itself is too close together, what i mean by that is that the lower pully is right next to the jockey (upper pulley), what do i do?

What make and model of rear derailleur? Any writing on it? How far between the two jockey wheel axes? Can the chain go on the large chainring and the largest sprocket?

Derailleurs typically come in 3 lengths, short medium and long cage. Probably quite important to match what you are replacing.

Do you mean it’s like the one on the left or the right?

The LH is a long cage for large sprockets and the RH is a short cage for smaller closer ratio cassettes.
Or do you mean the top jockey is too close to the cassette?

No wish to sound patronising, but have your routed the chain corrctly through it?
