with the allen screw all the way to -ve (if that really is the case) they should be too easy to get out of, so something isn't correct. Do the cleats match the pedals? Are the cleats tightly screwed onto the shoe?
Yes.......as I say, the cleats were fine on the previous bike/pedals and the cleats seem absolutely solid/tight on the shoes.

Is there any lateral movement available before it unclips? If so, it's probably the cleat moving.

If not, a drop of WD40 into the spring mechanism (or other oil as recommended) should sort it right out.

I went weeks banging my knee on the top tube trying to unclip when all I needed was a little lubing up!

This!
If I neglect to lube the springy bit on the pedal, as mythste above has said - one drop on each pivot, then it can get tough to unclip.
I wouldn't oil the actual cleat, just the pedal mechanism,

Absolutely no lateral movement.
I plan to "lube" them on Friday and see if that does the trick.......thanks

Wind the tension all the way to " - "until there are a few miles on the pedals and cleats, then you can set the tension to a more realistic level once they're bedded in (I run about 1/3 - 1/2 tension). Keep them clean and moderately well lubed and they'' soon be nice and slick.
Thanks............but as I say......they are already all the way to "-" and have been since I got the bike. Now done 300ish miles but the problem seems worse.
I have never "lubed" them but will do so on Friday and hopefully that will sort it.

I'm sure that'll be all it will take, I couldnt fathom how such a small amendment could make such a huge difference - but it did!

They sort of came with the bike.........as in the bike comes without pedals so I chose them as "extras".
I would contact the seller and ask for the missing cleats, or look in the package. Worse case, let me know as I have a few spares for the numerous sets of pedals I have purchased, I can send you some.

Dave there is lot of confusing information here, cleats come with the pedals and are specific to that brand so if you have egg beater pedals and shimano cleats you will have a problem. The adjustment on the cleats adjusts what is known as the float which is the amount of lateral movement once you are clipped in a plus sign could mean more float and a minus sign less.if you have mismatch of cleat and pedal this will be all over the place.

Some sellers don't include the cleats with the pedals, I've bought in this way as I didn't need the cleats and it saved me a couple of quid

Are you clipping out away from the bike? You have to buy multi release cleats to clip out both ways (SHIMANO)

I assume the reference to egg beater just means the standard flip over two sided spd type pedal, rather than egg beater brand that are very different visually, and so I reckon the problem is that the original pedals may have been SPD-alike rather than SPD and though supposedly 'compatible' this 'shimano comaptible' bit is just the 2 bolt cleat mounting to fit SPD shoes, I had WMD? pedal/cleats and they worked fine together but a shimano pedal wouldn't take these cleats but a shimano cleat would fit the pedals albeit very BADLY so I wonder if one of the components is a copy?

Thank you.
I'm clearing out the garage tomorrow (as instructed by her who must be obeyed) so will check the packaging.
Failing that I will take you up on your kind offer.

I'm not convinced that the cleats and pedals are a perfect match - can you tell us EXACTLY what cleats and pedals you are using?
Will do that tomorrow.........although I'm not sure how to check ???
Cleats were supplied with shoes when purchased with the "old" bike and I was too ignorant to ask/check.
