I assume the reference to egg beater just means the standard flip over two sided spd type pedal, rather than egg beater brand that are very different visually, and so I reckon the problem is that the original pedals may have been SPD-alike rather than SPD and though supposedly 'compatible' this 'shimano comaptible' bit is just the 2 bolt cleat mounting to fit SPD shoes, I had WMD? pedal/cleats and they worked fine together but a shimano pedal wouldn't take these cleats but a shimano cleat would fit the pedals albeit very BADLY so I wonder if one of the components is a copy?
As you say...........my reference to egg beater was just my description........definitely Shimano (didn't know that was a brand name.
I will check the other points tomorrow and confirm.

As promised.............photos of the pedal (clip side only) and shoe cleat. Both are clearly stamped 'Shimano'
Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

I'm not convinced that the cleats and pedals are a perfect match - can you tell us EXACTLY what cleats and pedals you are using?

Post pics of shoes and cleats

Some sellers don't include the cleats with the pedals, I've bought in this way as I didn't need the cleats and it saved me a couple of quid

Photos are now posted as promised.

I'll ask as...well, you never know...but which way round have you fitted the cleats, is your toe at the top of the picture or bottom?
I was tempted to say no-they are sideways on  :laugh:but seriously........my toe is at the top. But I do know why you're asking.
AS I say......the cleats & shoes worked fine on the previous bike.

Are you 1000% sure the pedal tension is all the way to negative, can be a bit stiff

Shimano SH51 cleats and Deore XT trekking pedals - should be the perfect match! If the cleat bolts are tight(?), I can only suggest user error!!!

Check the bolts are tight! I've just had an Ouchy clipless moment, couldn't get foot out on a hill at a junction. Checked shoe and bolt missing from new cleat  don't know if it had worked itself loose and was missing or was loose and came away while I was desperately trying to release my foot
