Oops, I sold my Tricross (with cable discs) to a colleague for commuting. On about the second day of commuting on it he broke a front spoke by braking hard while hitting a pothole; he is quite portly. I warned him that the bike was not a rugged old mountain bike and took the wheel to Cooksons at lunch time for a new spoke to be fitted, because he's a nice chap and I didn't want him to be disappointed with his new bike.

Then some months later I saw it in the bike shed and was horrified to see that both discs and hubs were grossly contaminated with oil. When I questioned my colleague he told me he was in the habit of maintaining the bike by spraying the chain and hubs with WD40 every few days! He was still finding the braking better than his old rim-braked hybrid so hadn't thought to question the poor performance!

That's a hydraulic brake problem. Cable discs don't self-adjust, and just open out again when you let go of the lever.
As for cleaning, I wipe or drip rather than spraying.
Unless they are TRP HY RD
