I fairly regularly venture into Rutland - wonderful cycling out there - may be a bit too soon after my recent fall though - left hand still recovering. Will keep an eye out for the next one!

New faces, especially in these parts is exactly what we need. Who knows, this ride might finally put paid the belief that myself Colin and Dave had that there were no forum riders in this part of the world.

I'm glad that you are managing to find some more CycleChat members to come and ride in your area.

Yes, I was disappointed at the low turnout on my two recent rides from Meriden, but I enjoyed riding with those of you who did turn out so I'm sure that I'll do more in the future when I'm down for family visits.

I would like to tell everyone what great cycling country we have here in and around Rutland, you are the guys that can tell people I am not making it up.

You've certainly got me interested. I'd never even looked at the area on the map. TBH - if it hadn't been for Rutland Weekend Television years back, I would never have even heard of it, despite coming from the Midlands myself.

I'll definitely come on one of your future rides, if the logistics are right.

I've also been thinking about the fact that I have a niece in Nottingham and sisters in Towcester and Coventry so I might plot myself a nice little 3-day tour - Hebden Bridge to Nottingham, Nottingham-Rutland-Towcester, Towcester-(somewhere)-Coventry.

Here is what you are missing Colin, took these from my phone a couple of days ago.

I've been talking to the train people, apparently even if I buy my ticket early and turn up for the train early I'm not guaranteed to get on the train with the bike, they run a first come first served policy with cycles on trains and only allow a max of two bikes per train. I can't even book a place for the bike in advance. I'm still planning to be there though.

I did Purley Chase on the fixed yesterday, on the outskirts of Atherstone from Quarry Lane up Purley Chase Lane to Ridge Lane.

Oh, that's not far from where we rode on our first Meriden ride. I haven't done that particular climb though.

I've only failed to get on one train with my bike, when it was so crammed with commuters that it wasn't physically possible to squeeze aboard!

Don't worry Dave, Helen puts her bike on this train all the time, never had any problems sometimes the odd guard can get a bit sniffy at rush hour but Helen has seen 5 bikes on the same train. BTW Colin I reckon I might get 30ft up that hill in the gear I ride.

Phew - I thought you were going to say you could sprint up it!

I've done a few short stretches of 25% in longer climbs at 15-20% and Park Rash in the Yorkshire Dales which I reckon is about 30% at the bottom, but I was using a 30 tooth granny ring and a 26 or 28 at the back. My hip and knee joints ache for days if I try climbing steep stuff in high gears, so I don't. 33% is stupidly steep!
