If you are that worried, how about contributing a little extra out of your own pocket?

I've done the organised Manchester 2 Blackpool a couple of times and never raised money.

I know the entry fee goes to the organisers, but without sounding harsh I enter such things for me.

I'm organising a century ride in August for Children in Need anyway, so it's swings and roundabouts IMO.

Unless they specify that raising sponsorship is a condition of entry then no, you don't have to raise money other than your entry. Organisers of so many of these events are just milking the cash cow and exploiting cyclists whilst they can before the fad of sportives is overtaken by something else. I did a charity ride last year and they asked for £15 over the entry fee if you didn't want to raise sponsorship. Now I wont do any ride that demands sponsorship as a condition of entry.

Bear in mind before making promises that the smallest note is a fiver.

Not strictly true ;)

Sorry, mate - but this'll sound harsh.

If you want to ride that route - do it. Ain't nothing stopping you. Any time you like.

But if you want to be part of a "bigger event", swallow your "hassle" and do your bit. Something tells me (as per here), charitable causes don't put the effort and expense into organising such events purely for the benefit of a cyclist who wants to try a route.
