Suit should always be worn for an interview, I say this for office based type roles.

I'd personally say either trousers and shirt at the least or a suit. Having said that, the best interview I ever had was at a local pub; I popped in wearing scruffy clothes to find out about the chilli eating competition they were holding and ended up having a chin wag with the landlady, during which she asked me if I wanted to work there; naturally I said yes and spent 5 happy months there as a pot washer. So yeah, suits/smart cloths aren't always necessary.

Its not an office based job but I will go with a suit despite advice from friends who went for jobs in the same area.

My son went for an interview last week for a position as a joiner. He wore a suit. At the outset of the interview one of the panel commented it was nice to see someone turning up properly dressed for a change.
He was offered the job, although he didn't take it.

I only wore mine in august but just a few months in this job has seen me pile on at least half a stone, hope it still fits.

It will, and you will get the job. It is written so.
