Carry Chain splitter as part of Topeak Hexus and I carry a Quick-Link as well.
I've used the splitter a couple of times to fix a chain out opn the road, never mine ... yet!

Here as well - chain splitter on multitool and missing link in saddle bag/pocket.

I also carry a chain splitter but currently I don't have any spare links (need to get some). I also carry spare nuts and bolts and numerous cable ties, bits of wire, spoke off cuts, valve cores and a whole host of other bits and pieces. My tool bag weighs as much as my bike!^_^

I've never snapped a chain but wouldn't be without splitter. Mine is part of multitool and a proper one in home toolkit. Only time I've had to use it on the road was on a pupil's BSO on a activity day ride. It's there for the one occasion I might need it to save 10 mile walk home .

Chain splitter is on a Topeak Hexus II multi-tool. I also carry a quick link and about 4 links of chain.

Strangely enough I've used all of the above only twice, neither time was on my own bike though!

I work on the assumption that it's better to carry it and not need it rather than the other way around.

On a positive note - both of the occasions on which I rendered assistance led to me being repaid in beer at the end of the ride (what more convincing do you need ^_^).

Today on an Audax one of the group I was riding with suffered a broken chain and then a second experienced their derailleur being torn off by a very innocuous and spindly twig sproinging intotheir wheel. We had a brace of chain splitters and a selection of joining links that saved some long walks. My stash of workshop gloves also came into their own!

I'm with Night Train in terms of the size of toolkit I carry on my touring bike. I even carry a crank puller, which I've actually had to use once in anger, but it's comforting to know I've got it if needed.

I carry a Topeak Hexus too with the built in chain tool; I've never needed to use it but fellow riders have. I also carry a 10sp quick link but never needed to use that either. On my town bike though when the chain has been a bit worn I've carried an unnamed chain tool and a 8sp chain link; I have had to use those.
The roadie may just have been to wrapped up in their own world, HR, watts, mp3 player etc; if thats the case though I don't give much hope for them in traffic

Just before Christmas I emptied my tool bag and found, with everything else, two crank pullers, 2 adjustable spanners, six combination spanners and a rear mech! The bike has hub gears!

Would not go out without a splitter and a missing link. I've had 3 chains break in the last 5 years of commuting - even though I clean, lube and change my chains regularly.
