There is no option for 'No, my 80 year old mother gets out there early in the morning to clear it all, and grit it, before any early visitors arrive.'.

I think I beat her out there once, but that was before 6am. She likes to keep on top of the job so there isn't the depth, nor packed ice, to deal with each morning.

My mum's amazing, 80 years old this March and doesn't look, or act, much over 50!

Night train sounds like you have two good women in your life.

Got fed up of the icy mess last year so I've been clearing the drive this year. Don't have a proper snow shovel so I've been using a large stiff bristled broom, which is working on our relatively small amount of snow (3 or 4 inches).

I used to do a shared drive and most of the cul de sac as its on a slope but when I had finished all the neighbours parked their cars on the cleared bit meaning I couldn't get out.

Now I walk to work , sod them

I've also got a shared drive with 3 other houses. I work shifts and have to get out to work so clear the driveway so I can get to work. The others don't bother as when there is a bit of snow they somehow don't need to go to work and stop at home. But when I've cleared the driveway they pop out to the shops to get "their essentials".
Lazy gits! More fool me I suppose

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I live down a private drive with 4 houses on it and this is the 1st time in 3 winters someone else has bothered to clear it otherwise i have to clear probably 200 foot + to the road to get the car out.

Just done mine.
Cleared the path from the front to the back door. Cleared the drive and the pavement in front of the house. I do it every time it snows as my drive is like the north face of the Eiger. (Very hilly round here!)

Whenever a path on the drives been cleared, the cleared area seems to melt faster and then refreeze to ice making it the worst area to walk on.
Well in an ideal world you grit it or salt it...
My dad told me something about salt being really bad for the drive surface or the concrete sealant, can't say I recall exactly but he's a chemical engineer so I didn't really think anymore about it. It's that coloured concrete with lines drawn in it so it looks like bricks and needs sealant on it once in a while.
