i'm a floater. i have an open water swim in 3 weeks and i haven't done any training. will start training next week, as i know i can get in the pool and do a mile without much problem, even though i haven't been for ages. i've bought my wetsuit, and the guy says it will make me bouyant. in that case, i'll be about an inch above the water!

i can't sink, i can't even swim to the bottom, my butt is like a big float, i can't keep it down. if i go snorkelling on holiday i always get burnt bum cheeks LOL

I float, and as a special service to Cyclechatters, I'd like to say, if any of you sinkers are ever in a pool with me and need, to, you can hang onto me for a bit....

I was just wondering how much weight an elephant can float while swimming so I Googled
Probably not too much given how much of this one is underwater.

Ah but they have the advantage of inbuilt snorkels.

<double take>

Hang on. Are you insinuating that I have elephantine qualities! :ohmy:

<flounce>

Not at all, it was just the link between what you said and your avatar.

It got me wondering if there might be some other animals that might also have the same sink or float properties unrelated to their shape and size.
Would a bald otter float for instance?

Otters float on their backs and eat their food off their bellies. I'd like to be an otter.

Elephants love swimming - one of my David Attenborough DVDs has wonderful footage of African elephants reaching freshly watered grounds at the start of the rainy season and launching themselves into the deep pools, submerging themselves and just swimming for the sheer pleasure of it. *melts*

Elephants swimming looks so wierd! I think partly because it's nearly always filmed from below, so they look like they are flying...

Dammit, now I'm wondering about the bald otter. I think it would get cold though. It would need a tiny wetsuit. And then you know what otters are like, it would be bound to take up surfing....
