He should have been done, the limit of 1.5 metres is there for a reason, some people do drive to close,if it had been a car instead and the truck had clipped the cars wing mirror i,m sure the car driver would have phoned the police as well. Some people dont pay due care and attention on the road and are only interested in getting to where there going. Truck drivers have quite a high reputation or safety standard to maintain and this idiot is making other people who drive trucks look badCan the same be said for all those that use cameras? Often just in case anything should happen?
A chip on the shoulder!
"A TRUCK driver who drove too close to a cyclist has escaped a fine in a court decision that exposed flaws in controversial new motoring laws.
Warwick Fribance was convicted but spared a $341 penalty when his defence successfully argued he was “caught out by technicalities of law’’.
The 67-year-old was reported to police by an irate cyclist who filmed the defendant’s truck passing him on a two-lane Sunshine Coast hinterland road at 7.55am on July 4 this year.
The video evidence showed no contact between the parties and the heavy vehicle to be narrowly in breach of the 1.5m gap limit, introduced in April."
"Outside court, Mr Fribance said the law was ridiculous.
He said he had been the victim of a cyclist with “a camera on his helmet and a big chip on his shoulder’’.
“I would have had to drive over double white lines to be within the law. Technically I’m guilty but it’s wrong,’’ he said.
“At least I don’t have to pay the $341 fine (given by police), only a $107.10 offender’s levy.’’
Mr Fribance, who retired from driving trucks after the incident, vented his anger at cyclists.
“It’s a war out there. It’s us against them,’’ he said."
I've been in large groups that pulled over and let cars through on narrow roads (when it's a long way to a wider road and the driver is behaving well). Maybe you just don't like some particular large groups or don't like not being in charge of the ride? There are some narrow country roads around here so I try to look behind me every now and then. That way i know if i am creating a log jam of traffic. When that happens i will normally pull over and and wave them through. They seem to like that.
Thats why I don't much like riding in large groups.
I know what you mean, but when I asked another forum, it seemed that most riders there had been endangered by motorists, so we're probably atypical. Some routes seem more susceptible to aggravation than others. As you note, it's only "hardly ever" - it still happens because there are some morons on all roads and we can only do so much to avoid them.Maybe its just the 40odd years experience, i hardly ever feel intimidated or get my self in situations where I feel in danger on my rides. I don't think I'll be renewing next year.
Why have most roads these days been reduced to 50MPH when there is clearly no need for them to be, because some person in highway planning has the ability to.
Current policy on what speed limits should be used where is https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/setting-local-speed-limits - basically lower where people live, near schools and other youth facilities, where visibility is limited, and so on...Have you got anything to back that up, or did you pluck it out of the air?

Regarding cameras, earlier this year i became a member of a local cycle activist group. I did not know what they were like when I joined but I liked their Friday night bike rides. A number of them wear helmet cams. Now it appears to me that some of these riders go out looking for confrontation, when I talk to them they can't seem to ride anywhere without someone has tried to kill them. They get into arguments with car and bus drivers, they report incidents to the police and van/bus drivers employers. Then post their adventures on the chat board where others pat them on the back.

Any way I won't ever be using a helmet cam anytime soon. I wouldn't have anywhere to mount it.
