Just been reading that the DPF being removed means that there are all sorts of ramifications. Going to have a chat with a friend of mine, in Wymondham, over a coffee, just before meeting with the independant Saab dealer. He has written down guff for me to hand over to strengthen my case.I may be some time today. Thank you everyone, for your advice and support with this. I really do appreciate it. If I could buy cake for everyone, I would.

It's only a car I rely on to get Hubster to clinic so he doesn't drop dead.

Hagstrom Saab not very happy and are very "so what" about it. Say most MOT garages will pass car without this DPF in there. Got very shirty and yelled a lot.mcurrently in their loaned car. Say they will MOT it for free. We really pressed them on the for free thing and say they will fit DPF thing.

I have absolutely lost confidence in them. If they MOT it I shall sell it PDQ

it captures the particle matter, then releases it later when the car is being driven properly in the countryside (still not nice but it will cause less damage to people there).
The DPF does not release the particulate matter later, it burns off the particulate when the exhaust temperature is higher, this occurs generally on longer runs or motorway driving, leaving a small amount of ash behind. It's worth every 500ish miles doing around 20 miles of continuous driving at higher revs than normal to bring up the exhaust temperature and burn off the particulate as this will stop the DPF becoming blocked.

DPF filters can also be cleaned to remove the particulate if you can't get it to regenerate, burn of the particulate, they don't have to be replaced if they become blocked.
wow, they have certainly come down a lot in price, a year or so ago they were around the 1000 mark. I was chatting to someone recently and a MAN (as in VW trucks) dealer was going to charge £8,000 to replace the DPF in a tipper. (I doubt it will have been replaced, many gut them them and map them out) its a total disaster for the air we are breathing.

Its actually even worse than that - vehicles that have had them removed produce more Particle Matter in town centres than engines where they were never fitted in the first place

The anti-pollution system in modern diesel vehicles has been designed to greatly reduce the vevy harmful pollutant NOX, this is done by lowering cylinder temperatures via the EGR when the engine is not working hard such as in congested urban areas. The by product of the lower cylinder temperatures is very high levels of the lung destroying cancer causing Particle Matter. This is where the DPF comes into play, it captures the particle matter, then releases it later when the car is being driven properly in the countryside (still not nice but it will cause less damage to people there) So with the DPF removed you are causing even more problems to pedestrians and cyclists in town centres, than diesel vehicles did before they were mandatory.

Up until very recently there was hundreds of companies advertising to remove / delete DPF. It was a very common thing to do, hence the change to the MOT, but this change will still not catch those who have had the DPF gutted (the working bit of the DPF removed but the case left intact) , as the MOT only looks to see if the device is fitted, there is NO check to see if it is working.

The latest idiocy that is wide spread and quite popular is "Ad Blue" Removal do a search for it
https://www.google.com/search?q=ad+blue+removal+hgv&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=HGV+adblue+removal
The situation is horrendous, the manufacturer has to fit all this anti pollution stuff, but outwith the centre of London it does not need to be on your vehicle, and as it is expensive to run and very unreliable many just remove it. Please learn more about this stuff and complain, its complete madness.
And if like me you want to learn a bit about Ad-Blue this seems reasonable.

It does seem as if the more they legislate the more loopholes are opened, especially after the VW revelations.

In Subaru land we fit cats for the MOT and then take them off again

There are/must be enough dodgy MOT garages out there that are passing chav cars that have been de-cat'ed, never mind having the DPF removed.
You don't have to be a chav ^_^. I had a car where the CAT internals collapsed. I took the CAT off and knocked the internals out of it, then put it back on. At the next MOT the car had lower emission levels when testing, than when the CAT was in place and working correctly.

Just back in from Saab. We have a loaner, quite nice loaner at that.
He's MOTing it, putting the missing part back and sorting the little jobs out for the cost of an MOT cert. Result.
His son was spouting stuff so I took my iPad in and showed him .gov sites, and insurance sites as well as VOSA sites. Got yelled at, for my sins but as there were 2 other unhappy customers in that day, something will be done. Should get Obi the car back tomorrow or the next day, all shiney and MOT'd, legally.

That seems odd, the bit about lower emmsions, please explain how that happened. personally I would like to see cleaner cars all round and I do not think removing the cat or DPF serves that purpose.
