Just back in from Saab. We have a loaner, quite nice loaner at that.
He's MOTing it, putting the missing part back and sorting the little jobs out for the cost of an MOT cert. Result.
His son was spouting stuff so I took my iPad in and showed him .gov sites, and insurance sites as well as VOSA sites. Got yelled at, for my sins but as there were 2 other unhappy customers in that day, something will be done. Should get Obi the car back tomorrow or the next day, all shiney and MOT'd, legally.

Tell son to butt out and mind his own business. You're dealing with the organ grinder, not his monkey.

That seems odd, the bit about lower emmsions, please explain how that happened. personally I would like to see cleaner cars all round and I do not think removing the cat or DPF serves that purpose.

CATS only work properly when up to temp, running from cold testing they don't do much for emissions..........

When they have fitted a 'new' part to the exhaust you will no doubt be looking under the car to make sure it is actually there.

However, bear in mind that with cats and dpf's the new item will more than likely actually be an exchange unit, this is due to the prohibitively high cost of brand new ones:B)

So while the inside of it will be new the exterior may well not appear so

These parts also carry a surcharge to make sure the old unit goes back into the system, but without an old one to return your garage will have to stand the surcharge as well. They could try and send back any old unit in it's place, or they might simply go down the second hand route:stop:

Of course all this means that visually you wouldn't know if they've fitted a new/exchange part or a used part that's been bored through :cursing:

Good luck and I hope they do the right thing by you :okay:

What I thought I'd do is, a I have a free retest at the original MOT place, is to take it there, and get my free retest. As advised my an ex mechanic friend of mine.

Nice one @Saluki

Mind you I would fancy arguing with you when you know you're in the right.
I was very calm and took an iPad with me. I had pages up showing the .gov page about it, the AA insurance page all about it (not covered with insurance if it's been removed ) and the saab forum page that turned up while surfing about. I think someone posted a link to it here too.
He says it only applies to cars registered from 07 onwards but not sure I believe him. I'll ring VOSA in the morning and ask.
what age is your car ?
DPFs were not compulsory until September 09, although some manufacturers were fitting them earlier. I had presumed test stations would only check that they were still on vehicles younger than that date. But if your car is older than that, and they have picked up on its removal then presumably they have a list of cars they check against.

You certainly have been unlucky buying an older diesel with one of these mill stones fitted. Can you not force the garage to just give you your money back ? you really don't want one of these things on your car. they don't work that well on recently manufactured vehicles, and they were a disaster when they first started fitting them - hence why it has been removed from your car in the first place, (they didn't remove it because it was working properly).

And check that the garage has updated the ECU, it will have been deleted from the ECU when it was removed from the vehicle, and if they just refit the DPF without updating the ECU (which they probably will, garages are stupid like that) then you will really have big problems in the future
My Saab is a 55 reg

The garage wouldn't give me my money back. I asked for a bit less than I paid so that I could just go and get another car but they were not having any of it. He said there was no money as he had too many cars on site. I asked for another vehicle then, similar age and style. All he could offer was a T reg or a Y reg that would need MOTing, which were in the holding place in Attleborough, that had been stood up a while.
The garage owner is being treated for Cancer but still at work. Don't think that he quite trusts his son to do what is needed. His wife runs the office, nice woman but a bit nervy I think. There is another lad works there, really dopey though. I'm not sure that he could find his backside with both hands and a map.

Will definitely make sure that the ECU has been updated. The electrics man comes every Wednesday to do stuff like that (househusband who comes and does some part time stuff on Wednesdays, very nice chap)

Saab have changed their mind about swapping the vehicle out. They rang and said that this needed doing, that needed doing and the other needed doing. None of which were picked up by the MOT that was done (and failed) We said, 'I don't think so, have your Dad ring us, young'un. We only want to speak to him'. Lad was smarmy about it and quoting over £500 for all this stuff.
Anyway, Dad rings and says rather than MOTing our Estate, would we like to do a straight swap for the car we have borrowed. 2.2 litre 9-5 Linear Estate, 12 months older than our other car. We've looked at the running costs - more VED by MGP about the same - and have said that is the MOT is of a decent length, that will be fine. It's clean and tidy, in good nick so we'll do the deed and then sell it on and get something non Saab.
I let Hubster do all the chat back and forth as I simply couldn't cope with it. He has meds to help with his depression, I have a bike and a guitar so not as balanced as him.
