I was up Snowdon earlier this month on a beautiful day.
The queue for a photo at the top was silly so I didn’t bother. It did seem like people were spending a long time trying to take a perfect photo. There should be a queue for photos and a queue just to touch the top.
This is a photo taken earlier this month from almost at the top, took me 5 seconds to take and no one in sight, although there were probably people immediately in front of me.

That it formed showed that those in it had acknowledged they'd have to wait.

Only if you subscribe to Insta photo fakeness. There really is no need fir a queue for the trig point. It is madness to do so.

At one amazing place in the Andes Altiplano I visited was easy to get to (not far from a city) and loads of people doing the selfie and I was standing waiting for a clean photo of the object (not interested in photographing some couple I've never met with small bits of object showing. Whilst waiting somebody came up and said along the lines "I understand and you have more patience than me and, take loads of photos as people leave and next couple move in and there's a plug-in for Photoshop that will take all the images and cut, chop, merge, heal different bits of different photos to make one without the selfie people". I haven't researched into it but made me feel a bit less of a weirdo.

Some people are so obsessed with selfies they are even want strangers in tneir photos. In India I visited a lot of different active religious buildings and on a surprising number of occasions Indian people wanted a selfie with me - I always politely declined as I don't want my photo pushed up to social media ... (always at Hindu Mandirs).

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
Years ago when I was planning some big ride or other I hatched a plan to raise money by saying "If you find that someone doing something difficult inspires you to give to charity, feel free to use my ride as a reason to do so - on the condition that you don't tell me".

I'm not sure what point I would be trying to make, and I didn't do it anyway. Now my rides are too short and uninspiring.

The ones I have seen are often mostly getting donations from fellow sailors or people who live close to the sea anyway

and tourists - but whatever

As far as Three Peaks is concerned - I would be more inclined to donate to the ones that sail and walk
basically they start in Caernarfon and the walkers walk up Snowdon and back - i.e. from sea level
then when they are back it has to be timed for the boat to sail up the Menai Straits - which is tidal and very fast running

The walkers rest/sleep/recover while they sail up to the Lake District and then the walkers walk - again from sea level - up Scafell Pike

and back

then sail up to Scotland - not sure of the location

and the walker go up Ben Nevis and back
clock stops when they get back on board

That seems like a real challenge!!!

They actually start in Barmouth, and sail to Caernarvon for the start of the first run

Fort William is the final point.

And that cannot be done in a day. The winners the last time it was done (2022) took 4 days and 4 hours elapsed time.

I am sure there are people in that queue who have gone up the hard way. Possibly even people who are also doing the 3 peaks. But they have stood in the queue.

I think these guys have shown a level of entitlement. They don't seem to care about the reaction. Maybe going to the press will bite them on the arxe. But they wont care about that either.

I have never queued to touch a trig point and they did not have to either. All they had to do was walk past it.

Two things I take from this story. The walkers have made themselves look a pair of dicks by complaining to national media. A quick chunter over a pint with their mates should have been enough. Running to the BBC with the story smacks of self-entitlement.

I've always understood raising money for charity meant the funds are passed to a charity. I don't feel these two have accurately described what they're doing.

I've ridden any number of charity rides and never asked for sponsorship. I love cycling, I don't want funding to do it. My donation is my entry fee, products I buy and put in a cupboard etc.

If I was to do a sponsored event it would have to be a challenge. I like walking. Around six miles is great fun, eight is enough and ten ceases to be fun! To walk the Three Peaks would, for me, be a very serious undertaking involving perhaps a year's training that I probably wouldn't enjoy. To finish would push me far beyond my personal limits. That would deserve sponsorship.

Stick me on a bike for 120 miles and I'll thank you for a good day out. There's no valid reward for this.

I always sponsor primary school children when they ask me to. Simply knocking on the door and asking for the sponsorship is, for many, a very big challenge. The activity a load of fun with their pals.

The entitlement is on other side as well. That those queueing expect others to queue, so they can get the ”perfect” photo. It is not a paid theme park attraction. By all means take a photo at trig point, but do not expect others to wait whilst you do that. It is not necessary. People being in your photo when a summit is busy is what you should expect. If you want a photo without others, take it elsewhere on the mountain.

It should not have attracted boos and writing a strongly worded letter is also somewhat over the top.

You maybe found no takers because they were bamboozled as to what to do. That was just an excuse to say bamboozled. I like that word.

I once did a sponsored eating competition. I felt horribly sick afterwards.

I have not seen anything about it for ages - but when I lived around there I saw some that started in Caernarfon - probably varies

pretty awesome challenge anyway!

There's 6 routes up Snowden, 2 from Llanberis one which follows the railway and another that goes up the side of the Youth Hostel then joins on to the Snowdon Ranger path. The Snowdon Ranger path is the traditional route up. originally built as a Hotel/Inn it became a Youth Hostel over 75 years ago.
