I.e. can we uninstall Internet Explorer and be rid of the damned thing if we use Google Chrome?

I find there are a few sites that don't work with Chrome and I have to use IE instead - the CTC site was one for a while. And some sites drop down menus don't work properly. But I use Chrome about 99% of the time.

If you really want to get rid of IE, I'd say go for it. I've not had a problem using Chrome for a while now. When it was first released it was little more than an open beta test (the proper kind, not the perpetual kind) so plenty of sites displayed problems like summerdays outlines above.

Now Chrome passes the Acid3 web standards test, Firefox almost does whereas IE8 doesn't even get close. Of course that doesn't really indicate how websites will actually function, because a fair number don't follow web standards anyway, and are built around looking pretty in IE, which is notorious for doing whatever the chuff it wants.

That said, I've been using Chrome pretty much exclusively for over a year now and not had a problem, except when I'm at work where for some unknown reason we're locked into IE6.

I wouldn't use Google Chrome myself, just because of the whole privacy thing. Firefox for me

I quite like IE8 myself (ducks for cover!) - but on machines where IE6 is present I will use Chrome or FF.

You can leave IE installed - just when you load Chrome or whatever set it as the default browser.

It's basically to see how people browse the web I think. It gives them a commercial advantage with their advertising programmes....or something, I don't really know really.

The main reason is because I'm happy with Firefox.

Well I do notice that the ad's seem to be more targeted to sites that I use (eg Wiggle). But as I don't tend to follow ad's any way I don't mind. And I would rather see an ad for something I'm interested in as opposed something I'm not.

Don't uninstall IE - as with setting up wireless and home networks etc you will sometimes require IE.

.

This is nothing without pictures, a video or some other kind of reference?

Until this comment is backed up, I believe that it is doing nothing of the sort.

The inability to remove IE is not strictly accurate. It is possible, but it is difficult (especially on XP, not so much on Vista, and even less so on 7). It does also have repercussions, such as the loss of ActiveX controls which means, as Amnesia says, Windows Update won't work.

By "remove" IE most people, in my experience, simply mean to either remove the component or to ignore its presence. Either way, the core remains.

Or you could install a variant of Linux and be done with it...
