I think bad dog owners affect cyclists, joggers, residents, you name it. Found this petition online and perhaps its a start to addressing some of the problems that are occuring:

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/dog-licences/

I have signed it myself. I'm not particuarly a dog lover but more an animal lover (emphasis on wildlife tbh). Just thought I'd spread this after reading a few threads online of people getting nipped

I remember dog licences, 37 1/2pence. Not enforced waste of time!.Liability insurance is the way to go

PS: Dog's get a bad name because of bad/ill informed owner's

Very, very true.

I dont think licensing would solve everything but its a tentative step. I think perhaps more discussion is needed between the government, dog owners groups and the general public.

Oh and "ruff justice" made me laugh!

I tend not to support publicly available documents which say things like "due to administrative penny-pinching" without saying what they mean, and which have spelling mistakes in them.
And I'm in a bit of a strop

No, we don't neede a licensing system with all the databases and admin bungles common to all government enterprises. It'd probably end up costing us ten times more than the licence brought in. A better idea would be for each council to employ a man witha van who could humanely gas all dogs not on a lead, caught sh*tting or barking or yapping too loudly or too long.

Excellent idea: can they deal with cats at the same time?

Having dog licences won't stop chavs roming the streets with out of control dogs, they just won't bother with licences.
