Kirstie, it's a difficult situation - even with friends it's hard to get across that you're worried about them without them feeling you're being judgemental, or that you don't understand, so I hope things come right eventually.

Thanks Baggy. Ultimately its up to her to decide what she wants to do. She's now decided her hardcore drinking mates aren't who she wants to be with and she wants to get back on her bike. She told me this in a conversation last week - thing is, we used to go to the pub in moderation after training and it's the same pub she's been going to to get hammered. I've just not been invited, which has left me feeling kind of dumped. But as they say your good friends stick with you through thick and thin and try to understand your problems rather than judge you - it's what I've tried to do.

As my old Gran used to say "a little of what you fancy does you good"
A lunchtime pint and a chat with old friends, a rollie with a mug of tea in the garden watching the sun come up, a glass of wine with a good meal, a gentle 20 miles bike ride on a spring afternoon. All these things make me happy, thats why I do them. Should I not?

Jeez yes. Only trouble is the roll-ups were actually killing me, and running my life. (@RT, I have done a quick calculation and realised that the 12.5 g pouches are actually 1/4 ounce of Drum, but easily did one of those a day, somewhere between 20 and 30 smokes).)

All things in moderation. I weighed 18.5 stone when I was drinking at those levels. Badge of honour? Macho? Hell yes. Stupid? Definitely!

That's the trouble ... if it was possible to keep a rollie habit at one or two a day until the end of time, I'd be more than happy to carry on smoking. But it doesn't work like that, for most people: before you know where you are you're smoking more than is good for you.

I've got a friend who does that. Two a night and that's it. I thought I was able to do the same but it seems it's all or nothing for me despite what I thought in August.

Nearly a month without now, got right into bad habits towards the end of the year.

Never one to let a Dexys reference go unnoticed, I should point out that bits of Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes", which includes the lines "You don't drink, don't smoke, what do you do?" are widely interpreted as a dig at Dexys singer Kevin Rowland, who was into having the band not drink and not smoke etc blah blah. Sorry, just had to point that out. As you were.

Back on topic...I never drank or smoked because I wanted to look macho but because I enjoyed it.

I did both for many years but the time has come for me to get a grip and move on to other things. As I say I drink when on holiday but haven't been to a pub in Britain for years and now no longer drink at home.

Unfortunately - as a smoker in my youth but not for 30 years - there seems to be no safe level for smoking. It's not like drinking, where low level consumption does you no harm at all and may even do you some good.

I believe I'm right in saying that in multiple choice medical assessments, 0-5 cigs a day is treated as medically irrelevant. Oh, and '12.5 g pouches are actually 1/4 ounce of Drum' - um, how you figure? (1 oz = 28g)

Britain is very into drinking. I'm still flabbergasted that there are pubs in airports and trains sell drink at all hours....
I'm amazed how much some people drink - especially when it ends up being 'so drunk I can't remember' drunk - it doesn't feel good surely; you feel awful the next day; it costs a lot (you can talk of putting prices up all you want but alcohol here is pretty expensive, relative to what is costs elsewhere..). Nevermind that it seems to affect judgement quite significantly in some cases!
