Any reason I can't just zip-tie a piece of doweling (actually, a cut-down bamboo garden cane) through my saddle rails to fix my Carradice saddlebag to my bike? Wouldn't leave it there without the bag - might be a bit lethal! Seems to sit well and feel strong. Will take it on a test ride tomorrow to see how much it sways.

Won't that mean the bag is too far forward and bang against your legs?

the whole leg-thing is definitely the basic stuff i overlook which i why i don't do this!!
my rails are really narrow so tying it straight on doesn't seem to work. got some saddle loops ordered but not sure if they'll still be too narrow due to my saddle. (bought the bag for my hybrid where it worked well on a beam rack but wanted something lighter for my road bike)

The other problem with a dowel is it may slide sideways after a while bumping over our roads. I gave up and strap my other-brand saddlebag through the rails. The straps end up twisted which probably shortens their life but it seems to work.
