So little rainfall that the canal and river trust are closing some canal locks up my end, and restricting the use of others. Blimey.

And what's all this "we've  declared a drought" nonsense? Drought is a specific term, scientifically defined as 14 consecutive days without measurable precipitation. It doesnt need declaring, it just happens. A water shortage arises as a consequence of a drought, and is not a drought in and of itself. Jeez, they'll be declaring tooth decay next.

Damn them and their lax use of scientific terms and the English language. How dare they make me angry so early in the morning!

On a happier note The Drought by The Kill Devil Hills is a superb album, check it out.

Where do you get that from?

I can't find any definition of drought that mentions a specific time frame.

And none of these scientists appear to agree with you

Nor does the Met Office

I'm studying for an OU degree in Environmental Science. Module U116, Block 1. There is very much a formal definition of "drought." If you disagree you can take it up with the OU, but for the moment you'll forgive me if I stick with my tutor, who is a full prof.

You can also take it up with the Met Office, who also use the 14 day definition.

And the Environment Agency.

But best of all, the wise and sage academics at The Sun agree with me. No arguing with that!

So what they SHOULD do is mention that the conditions have reached a point where there is a drought
rather that "declaring" it a drought

One of which is pointing out that we have reached a point that the scientists (which will shortly include Drago) agree that it is a drought

and THe People In Charge making a definitive statement that something has happened
which it hasn't

but basically they are managers - and most of us has experienced "Management"

OK, I have now looked it up in my paper Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology (although a bit out of date, I doubt this has changed) and it has has the following to say:

drought (Meteor). Lack of rain. A partial drought is a period of at least 29 days the mean daily rainfall of which does not exceed 0.25mm. And absolute drought is said to exist if, for at least 15 days the rainfall on each day has been less than 0.25mm.

So OK, there is a scientific definition which pretty well matches yours.

Exackerley! My learned friend gets it.

It's a bit like the police or trumpton declaring a major incident - I know why they do it (to open up access to resources and government channels of communication) but in reality it was a major incident the moment the 747 crashed into the commuter train!

I know what you mean
I did a Chemistry Degree
and then spent 20 year in the techy bit of an IT department - techy enough that we were the people the programmers went to for help

so I know a lot of technical definitions of stuff - understand a lot less than I used to but whatever

so people making statements about stuff often has me muttering

My Masters is in celestial mechanics so I know lots of completely irrelevant technical definitions.

I would have done another MSc but student finance for postgrads is age limited and I'd have timed out by age before completing the course, so as it was a completely new subject anyway I thought i'd start again and learn a completely new set of irrelevant technical definitions that'll do nothing but make me angry!

About smaller balls orbiting bigger balls 😳

When I was at school - back when Moses were a lad - we were told that described the whole of creation from planets stars etc and also at sub-atomic level

Then I went to university and found out that the tiny ones are not like balls and don;t go in circles and are not balls

and some can be above or below the nucleus and will be both - possibly at the same time - but the only place it is never is in the plane of the nucleus - which is always moving and at any given point an electron of Drago's undies could be up Dave's nose

possibly

I got rather confused when it got to the Maths of all that
