That reminds me of our Citroen GS, new in 1973. It had the handbrake in the dash back then!
Aye, as for handbrakes being contentious i used to work for a SAAB main dealer and they had a strange handbrake. not only was it on the front wheels but once it was properly set (with a 15 thou feeler gauge) the correct travel on the lever was 6 'clicks'. No end of MOT stations used to fail them on 'excessive lever travel' despite them being perfectly adjusted.
Another one was my ex's Peugeot 205, they put it on the machine and say "the handbrake isn't working" despite the fact that the rear wheels were locked solid but because the back end was so light the rollers were still turning and unable to take a reading.
