Dreams

I don’t dream or, to be more specific, I don’t ever recall dreaming. I answered a questionnaire about visualisation put out by an Oxford university research team a number of years ago who determined that I am aphantasic and my lack of visual dreams is probably part of that.

Just had one...

I was on some sort of Canal Cruise in Austria, but I had to get off and walk every day.
The boat would promptly disappear every day as would everyone else on board.

The boat would come back and pick me up every day, but my fellow passengers always slagged me off for being late back, as if I had been wandering off course.
I couldn't understand why.
They all had comedy sized bingo pens/felt tipped pens (several feet long and with corresponding girth) for marking their journey each day.

Anyway, this day, I was walking, falling in ditches, etc, but then the boat didn't appear at the usual time.

I then got to a junction and seemingly took a wrong turn without realising.

I found myself in Brig ('Breeg'), Switzerland, where I'd been before and is where you'd get the train to Zermatt (Matterhorn) and so on. Nowhere NEAR the Austrian border!.

This was not the strange thing though, I found I was suddenly in 1988 or thereabouts!

Yes, 1988!!

I went to a Supermarket to try and find a cash machine to get change for a phonebox just to call the cruise company.

Can I just say, this place was like a film set and I genuinely wondered if I should have mentioned the Berlin Wall or asked what the latest with 'Gorby' was, etc.
I did vaguely think about trying to get to the East German border at the very least just so I could see it.

The men were in suits or shirts and ties, save for the guys doing the trolleys who where in blue, cloth work jackets (probably with a shirt and tie underneath), the woman in skirts, with scaled back '80s' make up, the walls were that light blue colour and the kids were in obvious hand - me - down clothes too.

It may have been in Switzerland, but the whole place just screamed of what a supermarket was like when I was a kid!!

There (strangely) was an airport/airfield next door and I could see a 727's tail just above the trees.

I found one of the aformentioned giant pens for sale, but how to pay for it and to get change for a phone box to explain where I was to the people on the boat?

I asked a bunch of young '80s'fied' ladies at a desk at the entrance, (where cakes were being sold), where the nearest cash machine was, but none of them spoke English, so I had to use my School boy German, complete with a few visual gestures.

I was told the nearest one was at a place called 'The London Exchange Club', which I had seen an advert for and what appeared to be some sort of bar or nightclub.

The woman then had a disagreement as to how to get there, with me trying to listen intently to glean as much as I could recognise as possible, all the while, brandishing the giant pen, which I realised I'd probably have to give back anyway (I doubt they did 'Switch').

The 1980s's setting was just so amazing and I was starting to think "Sod it, I'll stay here, the sheer 'retro' is AMAZING and I don't need any more slagging off anyway!!"

... Then I woke up.

Is that from Austria to Italy over the Brenner pass?
Yes if you ask for a ticket to Brig in Switzerland, they will not know where you mean, as it is pronounced Breeeeeeeeg.
I don't know, it was never stated in Austria where I was, but it must have been one hell of a wrong turning to suddenly end up where I was in Switzerland anyway! 😆

Besides the notion of having canals in the Alps is also slightly weird surely anyway?
I mean, just imagine all the locks you'd need, unless half of it was in tunnels like the railway (actually, maybe that's why the boat always disappeared, coming to think of it! 😆).

It's also the Simplon and Simplon Tunnel from Brig to Italy.

Having been over there on the train, it doesn't seem much like Canal territory anyway and that's north to south, but from East to West, possibly via Liechtenstein? Wow! :giggle:

As for waterways in Alpine tunnels... The St Gotthard Canal, anyone?
The St Bernard Pass Ship Navigation Company? 😆

I dream about the moderators on CC. In my dreams they allow me to post any jokes I want. I wake up in a sweat only to find its not real

I find that I have bad dreams more when I get up for a pee, thinking about making a cup of coffee, but go back to bed again. I can only remember slight bits of those dreams, but they are bad enough to sometimes wake me up thinking they are actually happening!🙄

"The Punt, what is it and why didn't/doesn't Scotland use it?"

I was about to hear an official answer from some historian on the telly, but... I was woken up by the alarm on my phone.

Oh well, never mind.
