Drinking in a pub on your own

Once upon a time, I'd have rather gouged my eyes out with spoons than drink in a pub alone, unless I was waiting for someone else.

These days, though, I actually enjoy my own company. I really like getting a pint, sitting in a quiet corner, and catching up on news etc., without needing or wanting company.

Am I just very sad and anti social, or is it an age thing?

What's the problem with it? Sometimes you just fancy getting out the house and having a bit of peoplewatching. Sometimes a place has a beer on tap you're particularly fond of and you just fancy nipping in for a pint.

I'm quite happy to do that. In fact I usually do especially if there's a match on the TV. Pop down the local, pull up a chair and grab a pint. Though as I am a regular, I do know a few peeps in there, especially those who also watch the footy.

I don't generally drink but as I've done more cycle touring it's become part of my touring ritual to find a quiet pub, buy a bite to eat and a pint of cider and sit in the corner and just chill out for a while.

None as far as I can see, but some people get sniffy about it.

Thing is, you'd do it in a coffee shop without anyone batting an eyelid, so why is it so different if you swap the cappuccino for a pint?

Apart from her, I do talk to people who seem to think that you are some sort of latent alcoholic if you should happen to nip into a pub for a quiet pint on your tod.

I'm quite happy to drink alone in a pub; some of my most interesting conversations have been struck up that way. In African hotel bars there's a slight difference in that there are sometimes solitary women nursing a warm coke, who do everything they can to attract your eye, which makes it awkward because everywhere you look, they're there.

Good Idea, and highly sensible, on any cycle tour to replace the fluid you've lost through cycling - you wouldn't want to suffer dehydration.

Nope. You're almost certainly happy, very pleasantly social, and age doesn't matter.

Nothing better than stopping off on the way home; read the paper and do the Guardian crossword (the quick one).

I do it, only during the summer, but there`s a nice pub on my ride home from work. On a nice sunny evening I`ll pop in there for a cold one or two and just sit in the beer garden and people watch...............lovely

I rarely go out for a drink but there's a good proper beer pub nearby and I go in there on my own from time to time. It's never struck me as being odd or wrong. I like to sit on a bar stool and keep my eyes on what's going on around me.

I have no problem as I do it myself when travelling for work etc but find it a bit odd if you just go by yourself when you have family at home.

I'll stay out to meet friends but would never stay away from home to drink by myself in a pub. I know people that just go for an hour by themselves before heading home.

In fact how do you get a local unless you're willing to go and sit in it on your tod for a while??
