As long as I breathe, I attack.
I have found the more you ride the less you can get by on as well , did 67 miles the other sunday .
Breakfast was mini shreddies , 1 piece of toast + coffee
took a kellogs elevenses bar + 1 bottle of water
coffee stop was a coffee + a "porridge " cereal bar thing.

As it is your longest ride so far and double what you normally do then feeling your legs burning towards the end isnt particularly odd, if you had more to eat and drink then you would likely have felt the same way too.

Maybe next time I'll give myself a longer rest, I just stopped occasionally to take a drink, no more than a few minutes.

Proper food and a break

This.....in spades.
Forget all the gels. You are not an elite athlete, you just need proper food and drink. Simple.
And as others have said, your legs are aching because you have pushed yourself and you are simply not fit enough for the distance and/or effort.
Sorry if this sounds harsh. But that's the reality. Keep riding, keep pushing the mileage up and you will get there.

You're 100% correct but thanks I'll kerp these ol' legs rollin'

You've got to be careful not to over drink and eat during the ride. I tend to eat a banana before I set off. And take a 750 ml bottle of water with one of those soluble energy / electrolyte tablets, for each 50 miles of each longer ride. Sub 50 miles, I won't typically get through even that ( unless it's particularly warm). I usually try to find a coffee emporium somewhere en route as well.

Think maybe I didn't rest enough enroute only stopped for a drink every 30mins for a couple of minutes. Thanks

I am new to all this, and it is good to read what others do, and also confirms that what i thought was a good idea, actually was. With regard to the fitness, i am a 52 year old carrying about half a stone of belly fat which i am hoping to shift with cycling, but after my 14 miles today i had no problems with my legs and knees, could have carried on easily, but time was of the essence, i put this down to regular swimming, i also play golf and carry my bag and all the clutter that entails. I was more surprised at how easy i found it, and didn't realise i had gone so far in such a short space of time until i clocked it on the googleped thing. When i say regular i mean about 50-60 lengths once a week, thats about a mile or just short of, and i spend no more than an hour doing it. Another positive from the swimming is i can hit a golf ball about 20-30 yards further than i used to, i just need to try and hit it in the right direction LOL. Swimming is highly boring, but it is effective, and has cured my 10 year back problem.

Cheers..............Howard

I think there is a disconnect in your thinking between what you eat and what you do.
An old steam train would not produce the steam if the engine was not fed logs ( forgive me Vernon) and there is a direct correlation between the two but having aching legs after an unusually long ride and thinking you can fix this by throwing more logs on is not intelligent.

That's why I'm asking questions.I may not be as smart as you,,but if I don't know I ask.
