DSG - anyone have experience of these?

DSG, more gears and with flappy paddles. !

I quite like the more gears and flappy paddles.

The former makes a closer match to vehicle speed & engine speed possible (unlike my early 90's Orion auto with 3 speeds!) and the latter handy when using manual mode, keeps your hands on the wheel - especially useful if you are ascending or descending very steep hills.

I have only used the flappy paddles on my 8 speed once. The auto mode is so good I leave it doing it's stuff.

I've known several people who ended
up scrapping otherwise perfectly good and not all that old cars because of DSG faults which were uneconomic to repair

Modern generation VW Group DSG is generally quite reliable, but in the event it shoul misbehave it can be eye-watering as the garage abally invades you.

Depending on the model and the garage its typically another £250-£400 for a DSG service, on top of the vehicle service, every 37,000 miles.

Much as I dont mind it at all, I bought my van with my own money so steered well clear of DSG and Haldex on the KISS principle - when the going's good its still bending you over unnecessarily, and when the going is bad your farts will be silent for years after, so decided just to avoid it altogether.

Classic automatics offer the most gears - up to 10 speed, with flappy paddles an option.

Modern torque converter autos are a game changer. Best transmission ever; have your cake and eat it!
I can't see any point in a DSG. 4ms gearchange? Unless you're drag racing it's pointless. 0.2 seconds on my ZF8 is way faster than I can do on a good manual.

8 - 10 gears. Buttery smooth setting off and seamless changes. So relaxing to drive in traffic. Flappy paddles if you want them, or just put it into sport mode and let it do its thing.

Aye, im a big fan of a torque converter slush, but only on engines with proper grunt. The slush is a joy when tooling around in my T5 but was a sick joke in my Mum's old Chevette auto BITD.

Mind you, any car witn less than 300BHP isnt worth bothering with. May as well walk if you're that easily pleased.
