By the local tory councillor....

http://www.birminghampost.co.uk/news/regional-affairs/cycle-city-birmingham-scheme-blasted-7750763

and a few links I found to discredit her objections:

"The councillor said disabled people did not benefit from cycling and that "women of any ethnic group who wish to wear modest clothing, and I count myself in that category, are not going to cycle. It is a discriminatory form of transport".

She's obviously a dinosaur and stuck in the dark ages somewhere. It amazes me that people like this can still hold public office....

Disabled people can't benefit from cycling? Try telling that to my partially sighted wife who can barely walk, but who enjoys the freedom, exercise and achievement that a (very closely supervised) bike ride gives her.

Stupid ignorant woman (the councillor, not my Missus)

Not wishing to be controversial, but how do you know they are women?

Based on little more than prejudice about a city I've visited a couple of times and have no real wish to learn more about, I can well believe that to safely cycle in Birmingham you need to be fast and assertive. It is true, or at least arguable, that these attributes are more often exhibited by the young fit male than by "women who wish to wear modest attire". But that's the point, though: better cycle infrastructure is not aimed at for the people who already cycle but for the people who want to but can't or don't feel they can. The Cycle City project if it is successful will reduce the gender/age/ethnic/whatever balance, not pander to it.

There you go, letting logic and facts get in the way of a good anti-cyclist rant. You'd better change your tune laddo, with an attitude like that you'll never make it as a local councilor or newspaper columnist....

I see what you're saying, but in my defence I'd like to point out that my anti-Birmingham rant was entirely based on prejudice
