E-whine

Im seeing a lot of what I call E-whine about those riding E-bikes and trikes. First of all, out on the trails, Im seeing a lot more people out for rides on E-bikes. I feel that this is a good thing. A lot of them are husband and wife teams, that wouldnt be out if it wasnt for E-bikes. People getting out and exercising in the fresh air is good.

Some of the whine comes from people that complain about young kids on high powered E-bikes burning up the trails, riding much faster than is good for safety. They have a point. The other big whine comes from the head down, ride as fast as you can would be racer boys. They absolutely hate it when some old guy on a trike is riding up a big hill into a big wind faster than they can. They think it makes them look bad.

Couldn’t have said it better! My wife is one of those who wouldn’t be able to ride much without a bit of help, instead she happily buzzes to work on her e-bike with a big happy grin on her face. I just added an e-cargo bike to the garage and find it quite useful and that means one less car hauling some groceries.

and I opened this thread thinking it would be a question about noisy Bosch mid drives again.

@rydabent, the "whining" you're reading on here is about the use of illegal e-bikes. They fall outside the scope of the UK EPAC regulations for e-assist bikes.

US law is different, and excludes the legal use of electrical assist in quadracycles, in any US state. Currently legal under UK EPAC regulations.

Where are you seeing this? On here?

There's a fair amount of dissatisfaction with people burning around on illegal e-bikes and scooters. I'm not particularly happy about that myself.

Not seen anyone doing "the other big whine" about people on trikes going up hills. Are these elsewhere? Got any examples?

Well me for one, best situation is a long 5-10% drag which my trike will just scoot up. Trick is to pedal as well until you pass them and then stop letting the motor do the work. BTW until I snapped my Femur into 3 bits I was a relatively fit cyclist capable of 160 mile trips.................Leicester to Monyash for a couple of pints and a scoff in the 'Bulls Head then home, a trip I've done many times in a day but sometimes with a tent for an overnight session.

I'll ask as well. Where do you read/hear this whining?

I'd also like to ask why you find it necessary to characterise a group of cyclists in this way? Have they done something to upset you?

As for the hills and trikes thing. This is nonsense. Trikes are a rare sight and electric ones even rarer. I doubt any trike rider would want to be out on serious climbs. At 71 I've yet to see an ebiker on legal bike pass the group I ride with - on the flat or on a hill. In fact we regularly pass e-bike riders.

Sometimes on one of the rides I go on, one of the riders turns up with his dad aged 85 who if he gives it full power on his electric bike on the 15% plus climbs round here can drop everyone including his son.
The son being no slouch having the Fred Witton in respectable time.
Not many people can ride 15 mph when gets in to the teens percentage wise.

I'm trying to convince the MIL to hire a trike at Center Parcs next month, having not ridden a bike for decades, it will keep her upright but I dread to think of how much they weigh and she is a tiny ~50Kg... Longleat CP is mildly hilly, with the activities lake roughly in the middle of campus at the low point!!

I was talking to Jannie about this today. Mostly, the people who whinge have never been on an ebike, so are talking about something they know nothing about. They are often 35 or younger. They have no idea that Jonas Vingegaard also has an e bike. They don't understand how many bike shops would close if they did not sell or service ebike. This is all before you start talking about people and how it extends their cycling lives. They may not want an e bike. But who cares?

My legal ebike has certainly passed pure pedal powered cyclists on hills. Last week weighed down by a heavy pannier and middling rucksack I overtook a couple of cyclists on the steep climb of NCN67 through the Harrogate showground. They had made good progress up it but as the gradient steepened I gained on them.

And then there's those who want to go as fast as they want, ignore all the rules and "cycle" where they want. On vehicles that fall outside of the current UK EPAC regulations.
Why, simply because they can, "Who's gonna stop me?" being an everyday thing. The fact their bikes are illegal, over here, means nothing. Would you be as dismissive of people driving round on petrol powered motorcycles without a license or insurance. With a sizeable proportion of those being underage?

If not, why the difference?
