Why not wear it at the check in, and then take it off and tie it to your case afterwards? If anyone complains you can always put it back on again.

(I mean, let's face it, we go around wearing lycra on the bike - it's a bit silly worrying about looking daft isn't it? :smile:)

Edit: would it help if you were wearing it and the plane crashed, do you think?

The reality is you will need much more use of one on your commute as there is more chance of getting run over by a bus than my plane falling out of the sky

I always take my helmet in cabin bag. It does not take much space. Packing for budget airline is an art and I am Michael O'Leary's nightmare passenger.
Place your helmet in the middle, on the bottom of the bag. Then put your small cloth items that does not need to be ironed (underwear, socks etc) around the helmet to keep it steady. Then fill the hole in the helmet with other similar items, I usually put Lycra there.
Wear your jacket and put sandwiches and other food items in pockets.
