That would have been Les Wilkins I think, opposite the Odeon, bought my Raleigh Pioneer and lots of bits and bobs from there

No it wasn't opposite the Odeon it was by an entrance to a multi storey car park on the high street and not far from the dolphin shopping centre

I had a 23" one!

Some crap Raleigh bikes had fabulous paintjobs. The orange Scorpio and the multucoloured Mantis were my favourites.
Yeah, just seen some '58s' on Ebay actually.

My lack of research is that I have just idly been thinking about it for ages.

As for crap Raleighs', I had an 'Aztec' (yellow and green, I think) and then a 'Max Ogre' ('Reflective' silver with over - sized tubing, so it was like a tank) as a kid/teen.
They didn't seem crap to me, quite the opposite in fact, but, what do I know?

My Sister had a 'Maurauder' (blue with yellow and pink bits).

At least even the 'crap' Raleigh bikes had decent handling and rode nicely (apart from the 'Chopper' which was always horrible) they have 'loping' quality allowing far more distance to be covered in comfort.

The main reasons they were crap were the colossal weight, unsealed bearings, and lots of chromed steel which (as any Moulton restorer will tell you) is a bit of a 'mare for rust. Some of the sub-brands could be very poorly prepped; I had a Sun Solo where the headset could never be adjusted properly. Eventually a bike shop faced the head tube and fork crown, nd it worked perfectly afterwards.

I absolutely wasted a new green RSL '97-'04 fitted with Shimano 600 (Ultegra equivalent?) and CXP33 wheels iirc, it should have been taken out to the hills around Old Winchester Hill that I only discovered ~20 years later, instead it gathered dust and got some use as a commuter until I sold it through lack of use!
