Maybe a bit of ugly duckling/ beautiful swan? A ratty single-speed hiding a mystery high-quality steel frame (i.e. second photo/ head tube lugs)...

I could well be mistaken - pics of area are rather inconclusive to my inexperienced eyes - but the front hub with its central black circlip looks like it might be a late '70s(?) Campagnolo Record unit.

Very nice. I doubt they'll get back the cost of the resto, though. Rechroming is expensive.

It looks as if you could get a front brake on it, unlike most vintage track irons.

Britain has an amazingly rich history of top-class framebuilding.

A link to the Sid Mottram frameset above: before Mercian started making Mottram framesets in 1955, Wally Green (with Harold Peters) was said to have built the production frames.

An early employee was Stan Pike, who would leave Wally Green to set up his own highly regarded frame-building business in Crewkerne.

It may be possible that the Mottram & this Pike road bike were made by the same person.

It is ... I was an external examiner for a university there about 10 years ago. But a long way.
