If there was a proper authorised label which shows that the battery has been at least initially made in a professional manner

And then some sort of regulation making it illegal to sell lithium batteries that do not have that label/stamp/mark then that would be a step forward

It has been done with loads of other stuff such as drugs, food etc etc so it should be possible with batteries

ANother thing I picked up from one of the newspaper articles about this man's battery was that it showed signs of having been modified several times since it was first made - unknown to the poor bloke whose family ended up paying the price

Another very sad e-bike fire story on the front of the Metro today (I only read the quality papers ;) )

This is sad. Nevertheless, he wasn't calling for tighter regulation when he was trying to save a few shekels on ebay.

After seeing this I think I will put my trike battery in a steel tool box as I have to charge it indoors as I live in a flat. If it goes bang at least it won't fly every where, and have a fire alarm over the top.

We used to have similar "strong boxes" which had to be bolted to the floor under health and safety rules for the storage of air bags, seat belt pretentions in case they went off.

In the internet era it's like the wild west, is there any evidence that products carrying certification marks have ever actually been certified? I can't see trading standards having the resources to chase up the millions of products on Amazon, Ebay, etc.

See You Tube for videos of steel boxes leaping around like jumping frogs as the burning batteries inside them explode.

At least if there was stronger regulation then you could be fairly certain that anything bought from a proper shop would be OK

Even Amazon would be mostly OK - probably

Clearly stuff of ebay and other such places would still be something of a lottery

There would also be the possibility of places starting to do proper checks on batteries - I have tried to find ebike battery places around here and failed

What's happening in the grown-up EV world. Can you buy a shonky battery for your electric car? Is this well regulated? And if so can batteries for ebikes jump on the coat tails of this regulation?

I have never seen an advert for a battery that will go in an electric car
As far as I know the batteries that cars use are an integral part of the chassis and are not replaceable in a any reasonable manner

I have seen car shows on the telly - e.g. vintage voltage - where they use a series of batteries bought as pre-assembled items in boxes similar to those sold for ebikes - but they are a rarity

as far as I know

anyone know better?
