Elastic bands dropped by Post people

Just seen a post on another forum about this subject

apparently if you just post them into any post box then they will get returned to the depot and reused - or recycled if they are beyond reuse

In my day we had bits of string. No rubber bands then. Our post does not scatter them and I have to buy my own. We were expected to keep the string for reuse.

@postman (no, not THAT one! ) doesn't like to make it too easy for me though, so he drops them on the local pavements all round his route. I pick them up when I find them, partly to do my bit for the neighbourhood, and partly to save me ever needing to buy rubber bands again ...

I first noticed them a few months ago and wondered why there were so many littering the streets. Then I realised that they are the bands he uses to hold bundles of letters together.

Rather than having to post them back wouldn't it be easier if they just stick them in their own pockets rather than littering people's doorsteps?

I remember when mam would make us follow t'postman with a dustpan and brush collecting rubber bands for t'garden.

I think they've deliberately changed the colour of them so they're less obvious. They all used to be red around here but they're back to the standard light brown colour.

The postman wouldn't even need to put them in his pocket or bag. You can easily slip a large elastic band round your wrist.

As a postie myself I keep ALL the rubber bands I go out with to use for the next days bundles and pick up all that is left behind from the relief on my day off but then I am an old hippy who does these things because you should x x x
