Hi a_nic_an,

I guess that you might have already had this mentioned at your LBS if they're Genesis fans but I'm saving up for a new bike and I've tried a 2014 Day One Alfine 8 on my 20 mile round trip daily commute and really liked it. I really got on with the hub gear but I understand that it won't be for everyone and will depend on the terrain over your own commute. You mention that the most recent 2015 Croix de Fer has had it's geometry changed and it's the 2014 Day One Alfine 8 that I tried and so I don't know if the geometry has changed on the 2015 model because I know that they have at least changed the tubing.

Anyway I won't repeat what's been said before but the Day One Alfine 8 has been mentioned before on previous threads in respect of commuting.

Best of luck finding the right bike for you!

Vickster; Am I sensing that you are not a fan of the Croix? That bike looks to be very similar in its abilities for far cheaper, is there likely to much of a reason for that?
Thanks for the tip, I would require a size up but if they have it so cheaply on that sight then I would have thought that a bit of searching would turn it up cheaply elsewhere also.

No particularly strong feelings either the way. Like the look and colouring of the eastway, and the fact it has sram gearing

Cheaper because heavier steel frame, lower components, lesser known brand so needs to be more price competitive?

Look at the geometry, I think they come up fairly big

No particular make of bike in mind, but for my two penn'orth, I would definitely recommend one with a good quality steel frame; Reynolds or Columbus tubing throughout. I do admit to being a bit bias towards steel though; rode an alu frame Giant TCR a few years ago, nearly shook the fillings out of my teeth - !
