I need to head north to Kentish Town from Waterloo.

What's the best way to get out of the station and over the river? It looks a bit hairy.

The station is really confusing -- it was only on my fourth attempt to exit that I realised there were two levels! If you arrive by overground train, you're actually on a viaduct/bridge.
Outside the station (on the upper level), turn left and go towards the river. You'll see the south bank stuff with a pedestrian area, and maybe Hungerford Bridge ahead (the railway bridge you can walk across to get to Charing Cross). There's steps though, you can't really go over that way.

Waterloo Bridge is the best option, there's a wide cycle lane *and* a bus lane (not combined) on the bridge itself, so go right -- the big roundabout has been OK every time I've used it.
Once you've crossed the river, you can go straight on, although cars have to go left or right. There's a gap so you can get on to Wellington Street (coming the other way, there are bike traffic lights at this point).

I can be more detailed if you like, let me know!

Waterloo East, served by trains bound for Charing Cross, is on a viaduct. The main station used bt SWT is broadly at street level. There is a road exit via the taxi rank but it's easier to use the main exit and use the pelican crossings onto the eastbound side of York Rd. Once on Waterloo bridge Kentish Town is basically a follow your nose route via Aldwych, Kingsway, Woburn Place, Eversholt St & Camden Town. Use the "local bus only" lane up the east side of Russell Sq.

Alterntively (refer to A-Z or London cycle map) it's possible to use quieter roads a block to the west via Montague St/Montague Place/Malet St/Gordon St/Melton St/Cardington St etc

Which main exit? The one downstairs, by McDonalds, and the Pasty Shop? Or the one to the left as you get off the trains, that goes along the Shell (Esso?) tunnel thing, past the big issue salesman? Or the one that's down some steps opposite the bit that used to be the international terminal?

Not sure which is York Rd.... let me look at a map!

Right!

The one by McDonalds is Waterloo Road - it has an Evans Cycles on it. That makes York Road the one that you get to if you go past the big issue man, and down the steps that smell like piss onto the road, where there are lots of bus stops, and some cafe's and stuff.

If you are coming out of Waterloo there is a cycle lane which leads down to the victory arch and York Road.If you do a right there is the Waterloo rounderbout.

Victory Arch Waterloo...To come out of it you need to exit from the (ex) Eurostar platforms (20-24)...you would come out there and do a left which would bring you onto York Road.

20 year of man and boy of Waterloo, ironically tomorrow but I don't think I cycled in on 13/02/1989 although I just can't remember.Had an interview with the big bad governor after transferring from Ilford Depot.

Was it like new years eve when I had a bike nicked from outside the Waterloo so called bike racks at the time. The only bike I have ever lost there.(touchwood)

Tomorrow is 20 years.;)
